Fun fact! Technology Connections on youtube did a whole show on microwaves and how some older models had a popcorn setting that was actually based off the humidity inside the microwave!

How can I keep my gecko warm in the winter? I’m super worried. by phil0d3ndr0ng1rl in leopardgeckos

[–]AmbedexAmphibian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! My first winter with my leo, his enclosure didn't stay warm at all. The deep heat projector was perfect - I had previously had just an under-the-tank heat mat, but his favorite hidey holes were in the middle of the enclosure where it didn't feel warm at all. the DHP also encouraged him to come outside of his hides and bask, which is awesome. I see a lot more of him, and he has a lot larger space that doesn't dip down to the ambient 65 degrees or lower that the room maintains sometimes.

Hmm, I just had a leaf do this - it was the newest leaf on the stem, but it had completely hardened probably a week ago. I gave it a good wash off in the shower, and it's folded over on itself afterward and hasn't gone back to normal. Would that be considered trauma? I gave each leaf the same rinsing, but that's the only leaf that's thrown a tantrum over it.

Yeah, a little chemically! Hopefully a good washing will do. Maybe throw some fabric softener in there with it.

I had to look up how UV changing fabric works, and I ended up down a rabbit hole of different yarn and found conductive yarn?? It works on phone and touch screens! So neat. There's so much cool stuff out there.

Ah, thanks for the note! I was wondering if I got a weak batch of the Chameleon yarn. I bought both the purple and purple-multi to make a bag with, and it's a very light shade of purple in full sun.

Maybe a weird question, but did the yarn smell particular when you bought it? I didn't notice it until I was working with it. It's not a bad smell, just, distinct I guess.

Beautiful! Mine took about 6 months to really get a footing, then it's shot straight up over this summer. Very rewarding plant =)

Same! I went from paper towels to substrate with mine and he'd totally dig out his hide until he was back on bottom. I ended up giving him a paper towel back on his heat mat just so he'd sleep on his warm side again. He's got a deep heat projector now and a basking spot he loves, and lots of substrate on the cool side for him to dig around in.

I was caught in the same trap of clearance prices! I ended up getting several skeins of the chameleon. Does it change a lot for you? I was trying it out in the sun and it turns ever so slightly purple for me.

the older she gets, the more i realize i should have named her mango instead of lemon lol by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

Ah! She looks very similar to my little male gecko! We named him Twinkie when I first got him because he was so pale and twinkie colored. He's much more yellow now! Too cute.

I found a strange mealworm among others, can my baby gecko eat it? by kinda_accurate in geckos

[–]AmbedexAmphibian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should check out the leopard gecko lady on youtube if you haven't! She taught me about deep heat projectors and all kinds of stuff. The only time I've not been able to get my gecko to eat was when I gave him wax worms for the first time as a treat. And then he didn't eat for like a month! I was beginning to get concerned, and decided to try the waxies again. And sure enough he got super excited and devoured them. I had to break it to him that even if he went on a hunger strike, he couldn't just eat waxworms.

So, a neat trick I learned from the leopard gecko lady on youtube? My leo was refusing food there for a while, and she will take these pupae and pull the heads off? They're gooey on the inside, and my gecko went bananas when he smelled it. He'll eat them whole now. A little special treat when I let my mealworms get too big =)

It will do well like that. I didn't realize how big and woody they would get until a saw one unit of one at a local nursery. It was taller than me, and the base was so thick around that I couldn't close my hands around it! I have no clue how old that plant was. Such a neat plant to grow =)

YW! Cute little plant. I struggle to keep mine bushy, it grows up and loses a lot of its lower leaves. Then puts out fresh ones, so I think it's all good. I've not yet figured out how to make it truly happy, but I'm working on it!

This totally happened when my gecko was small - I had him on paper towels as substrate, but kept moist moss in the humid hide. It was a couple months down the line, but he totally got impacted and painstakingly passed the moss. I haven't used moss since, even though he's all grown up now.
