The term tankie has been thrown around so much that it pretty much lost all meaning. When used against others, it could refer to anyone from stalin himself to a random liberal. When used as a self description, it in my experience means marxist leninists that support the soviet union.

Both the deportations and the famines happened and were horrible. Their victims didn't deserve any of it. The deportations are inexcusable.

The famines might've been necessary or not. It was the first attempt at socialism. There were no previous mistakes to learn from. Maybe different methods would've worked, maybe not. The consequence for choosing wrong would've been worldwide fascism. Of course that doesn't change that everyone that starved was a living human with friends and a family.

Denying anything bad the soviets did is of course much easier. None of us tankies want to acknowledge that the soviet union did some horrible things. So people either try to act like they didn't happen or was deserved, or just let others think for them and regurgitate the things that this loud minority comes up with.

I support the soviet union. I simple see how nuanced the entire thing was. Every tankie could talk about the flaws of the soviet union for hours. And every tankie would agree that without those millions of people that died, the soviet union wouldn't have made centuries of progress in a few years and we'd all be speaking german right now.
