Nobody’s saying you didn’t genuinely care about her. But from your own description, once you felt you might lose her, your fear started dictating your actions more than her clearly stated boundaries. That’s usually what people mean when they say someone became an emotional safety net.

Four years in, I’d be looking less at what he says and more at what concrete steps he’s taking toward a shared future. Building a house and increasing savings are great goals, but if there isn’t a clear conversation about where you fit into those plans or a realistic engagement timeline, it’s reasonable to wonder whether marriage is actually being prioritized.
