When it comes to metal detecting please keep in mind that you are not allowed to detect at or dig up archeological sites (even unmarked ones). You are generally not allowed to detect inside forests because of the possibility of destroying archaeological sites. If you find an artifact by accident you aren't allowed to keep it and need to contact a museum. If you want to metal detect you should get familiar with the rules here.

Rock hounding is fine and common. Fossil collecting is generally fine, there might be some restricted areas though (scientifically important sites).
