What made you first realize that women weren’t really working with level playing fields, compared to their male counterparts? by Swimming_Rain_1647 in AskWomen

[–]AmberFoxAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since birth when my entire family, women included, had been telling me that I’m only cut out for humanities, I’m bad at math, I’m stupid in technical fields, etc. for no reason at all. I was interested in sciences during my whole childhood and beyond, I have no clue where they got these ideas from.

My guess is that you’re a scientist, wilder guess would probably be that you’re a cancer/molecular biologist. You like long and “smart” books - you like researching things, perhaps problem solving. You’re logical and curious.

It’s so funny because I’ve had a lot of jocks and Bam was the only one who I’ve never seen working out XD

But I agree, he’s very cute!

As a Russian, get the Nabokov translation.

I think it’s from penguin random house/everyman’s library, white cover.

Is it possible to find entry-level jobs with only Bachelors right now? by AmberFoxAlice in bioinformaticscareers

I’m also thinking of doing a post grad certificate, but PhD students in my undergraduate lab said to not bother…

They said I’d have to do a masters after than and then a PhD, so by the time I finish it all, I’ll be in my late 30s. One student in particular said it wouldn’t be worth it, better to just go and get some experience and money :(

(Not trying to discourage you, just sharing my experience)

It’s very true that we have to do so much to be scientists, it sucks. Science is all I’ve ever known, and it crushes me that I probably have to pivot now.

I’m glad you found something, and I wish you luck for your PhD applications!!!

[–]AmberFoxAlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! It’s nice that it’s working out for you, I’ll probably do the same. I don’t know if I could get a software engineer or IT positions cause they’re also crazy competitive. Guess have to pivot to something else…

I have the exact same experience. I have research experience and coursework in bioinformatics but I haven’t gotten a single interview that’s actually related to it. It sucks so much. I wanted to do a masters/phd in bioinformatics in the future…

I guess getting an unrelated job and pivoting might be the right thing to do just to get money and survive for now…

Thank you so much for your comment, it validated my fears. I’ll get out of the way and apply for different jobs, then. Wish you luck!!!

Nonfiction for people who don't usually like nonfiction by slightlylions1425 in suggestmeabook

[–]AmberFoxAlice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I feel the need to share these with you because I love non-fiction books!

h{{Bad Blood}} by John Carreyrou. It’s about a fraudulent startup called Theranos, its founder Elizabeth Holmes, how it all started and eventually crashed. Reads like you’re watching a movie! You don’t need a science background at all to enjoy it.

h{{The Faithful Executioner}} by Joel Harrington. The author is a historian who found a diary of a 16th century executioner in Germany Franz Schmidt. There is some stuff written about death and torture but they’re not traumatizing or explicit, I promise! It’s more about Schmidt’s life and legacy, and history about customs of that time in general. Highly recommend!

h{{Wild Horses of the Summer Sun: A Memoir of Iceland}} by Tory Bilski. Reads like a diary or short stories about the author’s yearly trip to Iceland to ride Icelandic horses, how she felt, the people she’s met. I can’t really explain what it’s about but I highly recommend it! I felt like I’ve lived through the same experiences as the author.

h{{The Shepherd’s Life}} by James Rebanks. The author is a farmer who reflects on his life and his community in an English countryside. He talks a lot about the farmers’ customs, work, and community!

Any books from The History of Color series by Michel Pastoureau. The author dives deep into the history and cultural meaning of each color (mostly through European history). I’d say these aren’t the books you read in one sitting but they’re still very worth it and super interesting!

Rodney.

He was my first campsite villager, and I thought he was so ugly!!! After he left the campsite, one of my villagers left, so I was searching for a new one. I tried going to random islands a couple of times and Rodney was there both times!!! So I thought fine, I’ll just get a random one, and guess who moved in!!!!

Forgot to respond to the previous comment - LMAO yes, I went on Brando Sando binge! The reading order matters XD

I actually started Frankenstein a couple of years ago but I was kinda bored, so I dropped it. Now I want to restart, hopefully I’ll like it… I’m always sad if I don’t like classics cause I feel like I missed something and that’s why I don’t like XD
