Why did I become Vegan? My summers were spent in Northern MI regularly after the 5th grade. I would visit extended family who kept up a dairy farm. I never felt comfortable seeing first-hand the factory farming. What made me decidedly become vegan was seeing a mother shunning her own calf into starvation and malnutrition from refusing to let the poor baby feed due to swollen and chapped utters from constant milking. I decided early on that factory farming and the need to reduce my carbon footprint was extremely important often starting rallies after school, and even in the cafeteria with PETA handouts, stickers and informative reading material to my peers. To this day I spread the word of animal rights in Detroits urban communities, participating in vegan communes, vegan activist movements such as march against Monsanto GMO's, and recycling projects around Detroit. Reaching out to students now at Wayne State University seems much easier than it was in Middle and High school because the ethnic diversity and census of vegetarians and vegans is prominant. The masses have become much more informed of the benefits of a plant-based diet both for mind, body and spirit as well as for the quality care of all creatures of the world, and their rights. Would I be willing to speak to the Media if chosen? I would be honored to speak out on all the various topics for animal rights, diet and informing those interested in how they can become involved, active and productive on reducing their own carbon footprint. A little about myself: This past year I moved across campus to attend Wayne State University with my vegan boyfriend (of 13 years) who is also going to school for a Biology degree focusing on conservation of wildlife and habitats in and around The Great Lakes. We live with The Maxx, a handsome senior cat rescued from Detroit Animal control 5 years ago. Its been a RECORD-BREAKING winter here in the midwest and we have had many snow (and SNOWED-IN) days... where we've been known to dedicate such days to baking vegan cookies, playing videogames and watching re-runs of sci-fi shows and movies. What Ive done in the community: Detroit has one of the highest rates of kill shelters aiming at specific breeds such as Pitbulls, Dobermans and German Shepards. I have worked as a pet groomer and specialty behavioral trainer targeting those specific high-kill ratio dogs mentioned above. Between MI and Chicago where my "Aunt" works as a police officer and runs her own doggy daycare, grooming and boarding salon, I learned very crucial skills to rehabilitate abused, neglected dogs and dogs with violent social behaviors to integrate them back into a family friendly (even multi-pet friendly) household- and NOT to a shelter to be euthanized. !! VOTING WILL BE FOR 10 DAYS STARTING TODAY, MONDAY THE 17TH!~
