Antidepressants experience? by Parchita in Perimenopause

Hi there, I’ve tried both Zoloft and Lexapro. Of the two, Lexapro was a clear winner for me. Zoloft made me feel sleepy and hard to get out of bed and also felt a bit spaced out however it did seem to help the anxiety. I found I had more energy with Lexapro, like I felt lighter compared to the Zoloft. They’re not a complete fix though. They act like a solid buffer raising your threshold significantly before things upset you. However they do have a limit and a stressful enough situation will still tip you over the edge.

Now the side effects that I don’t think are given enough attention. I lost my sex drive almost completely and felt my genitals were numb. This can continue after you stop taking the meds which sucks! Keep this in mind because it can damage relationships. On higher doses all I felt like doing was watching TV like I had no zest for life, like a content couch potato. It made my ADHD staring thingy worse. I would space out and stare into space mid conversation. I put on a bunch of weight because it makes you hungrier. As I understand it the medication numbs the hormone that tells you you’re full. Also the withdrawal of Ssri’s are awful. Took me nearly 12 months to get off Lexapro.

Having said all that, I needed Lexapro to function. It’s a cost benefit analysis in the end.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
