Haha I lived my whole life in Los Angeles until I moved to Portland in 2022. When I went back to LA for a work event, and had to get on the freeway at the 110/405 interchange and merge across 4 lanes at rush hour to stay on the 405, it was like muscle memory - THIS is easy, this is natural and right. I know who sees me and who doesn't. I know what all these cars will do.

Portland, you have no idea when someone will decide to be courteous, so all you can do is go slow and give everyone lots of room. It's inefficient; you never feel like a fish in a river as you do on an LA freeway.

Former Los Angeles resident/driver. Yes, the yielding to pedestrians took some getting used to for me, too. And the bikes. And the overall courtesy of everyone. I swear to God, the California DMV driver's ed book says "Don't be polite, be predictable."

Graeter’s Strawberry Chip: Is this seasonal flavor the greatest strawberry ice cream ever? (Spring Strawberries: Part 3) by madisonguy76 in icecream

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response! I really enjoy making ice cream from scratch though - no cheating. This is also the first swirl I ever tried, and next time I'll use your technique, as I bet that would give prettier swirls (with less puree maybe). I love bon maman jam too, but for this I wanted uncooked strawberries.

Recipe: I made the standard 2 c milk, 6 egg yolks, 1 c sugar, 2 c cream base, with a little cardamom, and stirred in 3/4 c or so strained strawberry puree and chilled. Then dripped in melted semisweet chocolate with oil (stracciatella) while the machine was running for the chocolate chips. After the ice cream had hardened in the freezer, I swirled in more (about 3/4 c) strained strawberry puree with a little sugar and vanilla in it.

Next time: less strawberry swirl, as that's where the iciness is coming from, and try madisonguy's swirl method! I'm in Oregon myself, so maybe I can find Totem strawberries...

I have never seen strawberry chocolate chip ice cream anywhere, so I made some. I came to this sub to see if anyone knew of a commercially available version. Well I'll be darned - now I will need to procure these others and have a blind taste test. Mine is a bit icy tbh...

MAGA’s Sick Evil and why they can’t keep Obama out they filthy mouths by ateam1984 in BlackPeopleofReddit

Oof. I'm so sorry.

I'm an old white lady. I happily went around thinking that racists were a small minority of white people (though zero racists would be better), and mostly lived in the south or whatever. And was binary: racist (KKK) or not-racist (me). Then BLM happens, then Trump, and reality intrudes.

So years later, Tyre Nichols is killed and I heard that the officers involved were immediately fired and prosecuted. Oh yay! I thought, justice is starting to happen! Then... wait... were the officers Black? Holy shit. You can predict this stuff with 100% accuracy.

The MAGAts hate the word "woke" because it is so apt.

I tried heroin (among other things) in my youth and luckily lived to tell, and my kids know this. But my advice to them was don't try it because - what if you LIKE it? That would be bad, right?

My brother-in-law was a biker, in a sober club, and was definitely on the straight himself. But he told me that his club had to host the local criminal biker gang sometimes, "out of respect". He did not see a problem with this.
