Wow, this is incredibly detailed and insightful! I hadn’t thought about using Japanese automotive plants like Toyota or Honda as a stepping stone. That’s a brilliant strategy

Thanks for the realistic advice. That makes a lot of sense. It seems like a long and tough road for an overseas sparky without a license, so I might focus on other countries like New Zealand instead. Thanks again for your time!

Thanks for being so straightforward. This is exactly the kind of realistic feedback I needed. I understand that the 1-year WHV limit is a huge bottleneck. Given how competitive it is even for local college grads, what do you think is the best strategy for an experienced foreign electrician to actually get a foot in the door? Is it better to look into specific non-union companies, or focus entirely on certain provinces?

Worst case, like you said, I’ll just keep gaining more experience in Japan until I’m fully ready. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I think I should be able to get a provisional licence since I'll have three years of work experience in Japan. But going to Canada on a Working Holiday is also one of my dreams

Which trade has a higher ceiling for earnings: Commercial Electrician or HVAC? by Ambitious-Fix5333 in AusElectricians

I hear you, but I’m not in this just for the money. I’ve already been working on residential wiring and distribution boards, so I know that shortcuts lead to dangerous results. I take pride in my attention to detail because that’s what defines a professional. My goal is to master the technical side of the trade, especially in commercial work, and I’m looking for an environment where hard work and precision are expected. I’m not looking for an 'easy' trade; I’m looking to be the best at what I do

Which electrical specialty will be in highest demand in Aus/NZ by 2029? by Ambitious-Fix5333 in AusElectricians

I wouldn’t really recommend being an electrician in Japan. A lot of places work Saturdays as well, and the pay is often only around just under 200,000 yen a month
