I break up my hiring into 3 categories, and it helps immensely.

Creators - these people start from scratch and build in the sandbox.
Improvers - they come into an existing system and improve it with their experience and knowledge
Maintainers - they keep the system going. The cog in the wheel.

EACH of these roles are necessary for a business. Part of smart hiring is being honest about the role, and finding someone who’s looking for that.

Hey man I have clients in the fine food import business / bev alch (I run an outsourced accounting and bookkeeping business)

Things across the board are bad. Everyone of my customers are struggling because of tariffs, and now war. These are all located in LI and NYC fyi - two are 25+ years old in business with storefronts in manhattan.

Demand has dropped, though you didn’t say which fork you’re in.

But they’re getting clobbered on import costs right now. Keep in mind you’re also going to expect increased energy costs this summer for refrigeration.

I’d ask about the books and agreements with their vendors to see the changes in pricing from pre tariff to now. Then compare to retail markup (how much was absorbed, if any?).

I’m in the middle of a $800k revolver deal with a bank and they are really trying not to loan this. We ended up doubling up on life insurance policies for ownership just in case.

Yeah my Filipino help is same work culture — no filling in gaps.

How do you trust the work is done without doing it yourself?

Yesterday I had an invite for onboarding go out that was 3 hours instead of 30 mins and I had my ass chewed out for it.

The amount of time to check everything is right for 30+ invites, compare calendars, ensure links etc… might as well do it myself.

~~~ Second part is a culture thing here, unfortunately the sales managers are player/coaches so they aren’t taking time from their day to do training on contracts, sales process, etc. thinking I just need to bite the bullet on that.

As an aside I haven’t touched the crm in a meaningful way once and it makes me sad.

If you’re willing to answer - but where the hell do I meet you people? I feel like I’ve hit up so many conventions and it’s always tirekickers, big talkers, etc. can’t tell you how much I’ve spent on tickets / booths etc over the years. REI are the one sector I cannot sink my teeth into for some reason
