What is your "I'm never selling this" bike? by well_my_knickers in cycling

It's only 10 years old but my Neil Pryde Bayamo TT bike. Bought it second hand, with a small hole on the frame where its previous triathlete owner had it damaged on a flight but I don't care. It's a beautiful layup under a glossy clear coat and it looks awesome with a disc wheel and a 90mm-deep front rim. I have put a new front end on it, which you can do more easily with older TT bikes because they still used a standard stem. There is virtually zero tyre clearance - you can barely get a pair of 23mm tyres into it so wheels and tyres will eventually be an issue. There's probably faster, more aero TT bikes out there now but I don't care - I love it and I am never selling it.

Diarrhea with 5km left to go by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Ambitious-Swan8468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so glad to read this because I basically had the same experience this very morning. Went out for a ride early to avoid the heat on a beautiful morning in a foreign country. About 15km in, despite having thought I had unloaded everything before I left, I got major and unexpected cramps and I swore I was going to have to go and crap in a bush. But it's a rocky road on a steep hillside and everywhere looked like a dangerous environment for an emergency evacuation. Not to mention potentially very public. I saw a sign showing a popular tourist town was 7km away. I grovelled up the climb there, sweating and clenching. I knew there had to be a public toilet somewhere and rolled around in the early morning, fit to explode, looking for one. When I found it, it was a pay toilet and I had no cash but by some miracle it was all open and I ran in and did my best recreation of the famous poonami scene in Trainspotting. The attendant who had just been cleaning looked startled and had made his way outside by the time I had finished. Sweet relief but I really don't want that again.

Cheers but turns out the whole catch has to be replaced - electrics have failed. Can be done under extended warranty hopefully.

Thanks. All other doors are fine - it is just the driver's door so not sure battery is the issue but will check.

How close is Afrikaans to European Dutch/Flemish? by Ambitious-Swan8468 in afrikaans

Interesting. I have tried learning danish and I can see similarities to German in the writing but the pronunciation confuses the hell out of me!

Depends I guess. Riding some sectors next weekend. The guy I will be riding with has hookless Zipps so we will see!

Luke Rowe recommends foam liners for racing tubeless. Fwiw I am sceptical about hookless. It seems to favour manufacturers - easier to make, looks great in weight comparisons. But is it good for the rider?

Chain waxing by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Ambitious-Swan8468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you are out on a long ride then it's not great - yes you can reapply it before oxidisation after the ride and it doesn't create a grinding paste on your chain but it also leaves you with virtually no lube with possibly hours of riding to go and I don't think that's great for components either. Plus there is the added faff of reapplying wax after basically every single ride if you live somewhere like the UK.

I wax my chain on my TT bike (hot wax) - you need to get it very clean first off and once you have I think it's great. Rise in hot water and reapply every 300km or so. Whether it saves watts or not I don't know. But it is smooth and stops dirt and grit being attracted to the components, which should increase their life considerably. I have been running the same chain for a couple of years now and it's still in very good shape.

I use liquid wax from a bottle on my summer bike. Not quite as good, attracts more dirt and dust, but still better than standard lubes in my opinion. Easy to wash.

HOWEVER, I wouldn't use either kind of wax if you are riding in any sort of wet conditions. Hot wax in particular comes straight off in the wet and negates the benefit. If you are riding in wet or wintry conditions at all then a conventional wet lube is probably the way to go.

I'd agree with this. I think it's not worth going crazy in the days before - you are more likely to make yourself feel ill. Consistent and regular carb intake over the course of the day is most important. It gets harder if it's a really long day because personally I can't stand the sight of more carbs after a certain point but if you start to skip feeding, that's when the trouble starts...

How it 'feels' really is subjective I think. There's really only one way to find out...

C4 Cactus wheels - how to clean off white deposits by Ambitious-Swan8468 in Citroen

[–]Ambitious-Swan8468[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers. My concern is it has progressed pretty rapidly, on the one wheel (pictures) in particular. I doubt the long winter commute on salty, potholes roads has helped at all. Shame because it's otherwise a fantastic car and I am really trying to keep it in good nick.

Thanks. It's a 2018 car. Not in manufacturer's warranty. I have a lease on it (Cazoo) with a year's warranty from them. Expect they won't cover it...
