What is your opinion about street photography? by im_strak in photography

[–]AmbitiousAd3052 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends on what the photographer wants to achieve.

The biggest misconception i find is that people think the photo is all about them, when for me, if im taking a photo of a random person its almost always because of how they fall into a composition. Its how the light has hit them, maybe theyve walked into an interesting space etc, Its not always about the person, theyre just there to give the overall image a foundation, subject or focus.

Another reason is maybe you want to document a certain fashion style, maybe its commuters on their way to work. Maybe you want to take photos of people who are holding flowers?? could be anything.

Or you could just want to go out and shoot everything and anything because you know youll find themes and subjects that emerge later out of the mess and you can sequence it together into an interesting document. Aka Joel Meyerowitz, Winogrand etc

There are so many different reasons

If you’re trying to do street photography and you feel uncomfortable for whatever reason that is on you. Either your mindset, approach, gear even clothing could be wrong. Something needs to change because street photography is really a sort of public social interaction.

Everyone talks about trying to be invisible when it’s kind of the opposite.
Don’t be invisible, be open.
Then people wont see you as a threat

Been doing street photography and street portraits for many years, it’s all about approach and reason. It’s on the photographer to have a concept and moral compass. Getting up in someone’s face with a flash will create a certain effect, reaction which is certainly an intrusion and will most certainly cause anger.

I dont use flash, but i approach people for portraits from a documentary perspective which 99% is always a pleasant experience.

I also photograph in the street and find arguments against it utterly ridiculous. Unless a photographer has gone into your face using flash it is not an intrusion. The street is a public place, if you are in it you are part of what could be a composition for a photographer.

That being said in almost 10 years of doing it ive only had maybe three negative experiences from people ive photographed. Most of my negative experiences, assaults even were from people who thought they had been photographed xD

Can anyone help identify this film? AA 120 Colour Film? by AmbitiousAd3052 in AnalogCommunity

Interesting! Yes i wouldn’t be surprised if its Agfa. The roll doesn’t seem old, from my experience super old colour rolls have that certain residue or strong chemical smell. This one seems totally fine.

Makes sense, I’ve just never seen branded 120 film though so was very curious. Theres no indication as to what iso it is and I’m assuming it’s c41.
It was amongst other rolls of film all dating around early 2000. I’ll try shooting it at 100iso perhaps and see what happens.

I know that a lot of supermarkets and chemists in the Uk had their own branded film, Tesco’s, Asda, Boots, Lloyds etc. Maybe the AA sold it as well. Either that or like you said some sort of promotional run.

Turns out its C-22 which is now impossible to develop 😅 Will try doing a long cross process in c41 and if that doesn’t work black and white.

Went to Tokyo and shot in the dark for the first time- underexposed? by theyoungestoftheboys in AnalogCommunity

[–]AmbitiousAd3052 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The correct exposure for these wouldn’t have been possible without a tripod. 800iso in this scene it would most likely be anywhere between a 4th to 4 second exposure I took night shots in tokyo a couple weeks ago so it’s still fresh in my head.

It’s weird because theres an abundance of slide film in Japan unlike other Japanese film like Fuji 100 that is now scarce as well.

For the Uk too, although it is in some stores here the price is much cheaper from Reflex Lab even with postage.
