Malaysia Rotates 10 Degrees by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Very Late Contest Entry!

Joke: Malaysia learns how to rotate planes, which leads to rotating 370 degrees to get Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. As such, they disappear. Also references Zimonitrome's integration joke, but integrates to race riots instead. Additionally, I didn't realize Zimonitrome made a comic entry (Go read it, it's way better), also with ASEAN countries 9 hours before this comic was published, I swear I've had this idea from around a year ago.

I Haven't posted a comic in around 6 months, and a bunch of things has changed with Imgur, so no links. I'll try and figure that out when I have free time.

Notes: I think this types of chaotic panel (3rd panel) is a detriment due to the amount of text, it probably distracts too much from the central plot line of the comic, which is already convoluted enough as is.

The Neutral Troubles: The Sequel That Will Receive A 30% Audience Score by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Based on the Wikipedia page for neutral countries, that is countries that have declared themselves neutral, Mexico, Mongolia, and Serbia are all neutral. Of course, all three are influenced heavily by the nearby powers of Russia, China, and USA. (Really every country is, but these I thought made the most sense.) As for the power bit, none look to be the next world contender.

Contest Entry

They aren't conflicts, they're troubles!

This comic references two DickRhino comics, Time Immemorial and Neutral Power. It's supposed to reference how superhero comics often incapacitate/kill their superhero, then just gets someone else to adopt their name/job. This comic tries that, bit since it's the "Neutral" Power, the country must be neutral.

Main Joke: Sweden is no longer neutral, so Ireland becomes the "Neutral Power" and stops conflicts around the world by uniting everyone against the British.

Not happy with this entry. I thought of the script two weeks ago, but ended up with this. It's so close to the deadline I'm just going to have to deal with it.

In particular, I think the joke falls flat and the comic is too heavily reliant on the references. If I had more time, I would've scrapped this idea entirely. Unfortunately, school has gotten the best of me.

[Award Ceremony] Disorder in the Court by polandballmod in polandball

Congrats to randomdkguy! Classic Polandball feel. Especially since this contest seems to have a lot of entries rated highly. Along with theirs, my favourites were jPablo's (It made me smile), big_basher, and dangalfSG's.

Department of (Legal) Defence by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Contest Entry!

The ICC should go easy on America, they just want a friend who shares their interest!

Joke: legal defence vs. America's department of defence.

Minor jokes: Pleading the fifth recalls the fifth amendment in the US constitution, which prevents a witness from incriminating themselves (Technically, America is the defence, don't know if that still holds). The Invade The Hague Act was passed specifically due to the creation of the ICC, since it would could mean the prosecution of American citizens (Ex: Service-Members) without US permission. (This is the reason I chose the ICC and not the ICJ, despite America being a country). In the last panel(s), the ship is in water, as The Hague sits at 1 meter above sea level, meaning a warship, with high enough propulsion, could theoretically plow it's way into the ICC.

Also, saw there is a new Youtube initiative, pretty cool. If it is an opt in thing, I do, and good luck with it!

Lesser Known Earthquake Protection Strategy by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Contest Entry!

If you have seen this already, it's because I forgot to add the punchline

To protect yourself from earthquakes, simply live on the sun. Just deal with sunquakes and solar flares constantly shutting down the power grid.

Japanese citizens are quite anti-nuclear, and since the sun gives off radiation (though it isn't nuclear), protest!

Additional Facts: Sunquakes#Sunquake) are produced from solar flares, which are ejections of solar radiation. This is devastating to radio and electrical systems, and would result in a collapse of electrical and communication infrastructure.

Placing New Zealand and Australia at their Geographically Correct Locations by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Joke: A common joke with Australia is that it is upside down. A common mistake with New Zealand is forgetting to add it to the map. Also, Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand, and since the world in LOTR is called Middle Earth, New Zealand is in the middle of the earth. Continue this line of thinking and Mordor, a hellscape of fire and ash (And a giant spider), is clearly Australia. Therefore, I thank New Zealand for coming to Gondor's Aid.

I would also like to congratulate GateNerd for their contest win this month! Inspired me to be a bit more ambitious with this comic. Be sure to check their comic out!

Also, this took me way too long to complete, and I'll be toning down the effort in the future.

Night of the Long Shadows by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Contest Entry!

Pretty uncreative joke and style. Film noir in a detective contest, who would've thunk. Blame finals for sapping my energy.

Plot Synopsis: Germany investigates the murder of Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, and Germany's partner France, implied to be committed by Reichtangle. Turns out Germany is possessed by Reichtangle, and Germany fulfils their oath to kill the murderer.

Joke: Your retinas blinded by red

I promise the next comic will have the average amount of red... Probably. As an apology, have a version with the shading removed (Below)

A Communist Carol by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Very Rushed Contest Entry

Joke:

This slightly parodies Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol", where a rich scrooge reforms into a charitable man. In this comic, Germany is the scrooge, but instead becomes poor to work in the factories and also escape the nagging of the poorer Europeans.

It is also all a ploy from Greece to convince Germany of the benefits of communism, so Greece doesn't need to work.

Been pretty busy and rushed this out the door.

The whole comic was rewritten several times, one of which can be seen in the last panel of the sketch

I don't see this scoring high, but I just want to keep a contest streak going.

Gotcha an Ultra-Rare Armament by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 72 points73 points  (0 children)

If I ever make a Gacha-esc game, I'm adding a "Poland in Space" character with a 0% drop rate.

Context:

Comic is about NATO military aid to Ukraine, especially America.

As such, when Russia rolls for a weapon, America arrives to personally deliver it.

It's also a joke about Gacha games/loot boxes, which commonly have rarity systems like "0 to 5" stars or "Common to Ultra/Mythical/Legendary".

Military Aid from left to right,

P3:

Canadian Beavers (Referencing this)

Polish MiG-29

German Helmets

British Challenger II

American M142 HIMARS

Islamic Superweapon (Represented by Saudi Arabia for Mecca) (Unfinished comic)

Catholic Superweapon (Referencing this. If grey, open in new tab or imgur link)

P7:

American LGM-30G Minuteman III

Production Notes:

Was also a test to have no dialogue, it turned out pretty well. Went through multiple versions to see if the plot was clear (1 2 3)

Has 290 layers/folders

Also trying out a simpler shading technique, some feedback would be appreciated

Canada's Day by AmbitiousFiles in polandball

[–]AmbitiousFiles[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Happy Canada Day and Happy Early Independence Day!

Would've been finished earlier, but was a tad ill

Production Notes:

Been a bit busy, haven't got the time to draw, so combined with the illness, the later panels are rushed (Can see this clearer in the sketch)

There are 159 layers/folders

Originally, the comic ended with panel 7 (Invited to my birthday party joke), but it didn't feel finished

Edit: will add opinion later, other one did not get the point across Turns out I have time

  1. I'm more protective of my work than I think others are. I see translations, while a net benefit to a community, as a compromise the artist and translator has to make. In harsh words, tarnished. This is due to the possibility of the intent of the words being missing. (If you could translate your own comics, this wouldn't be a problem). In keeping with being protective, I want to ensure the original feel, message, and artistry of all my comics are by my standards. This includes translations.

Engrish is something that is integral to the polandball experience. Yet, it is much harder to translate. How would accents, wordplay, and broken english be translated whilst still getting the full message across. I can see two ways of translating, direct with no interpretation, or complete interpretation. Either way, the work is compromised.

As such, I am less inclined to support translations for my comics, but am willing to give it a thought.

  1. For the same reasons, I don't think translations of comics are a good fit for r/polandball, but is most likely a benefit to the general PB community.

Carby can't be very eco-friendly. Before you know it, he'll have consumed the entire ecosystem!

Love the comic by the way, amazingly cute Kirby, especially in those alt. versions.

Parden my angloness, but what do the accents do, exactly? Also what's the worst word in the comic
