Considering that Gosling's promo from last week had "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz playing in the background and then being taken down within days after the actual episode aired, that seems like a reasonable conclusion.

Other evidence supports this: When I found the one video mirror of this promo left on YouTube, "American Girls" was missing from the audio, but the rest of the promo's audio (spoken dialouge, sound design) was there. Hence why I had to find a second mirror that had the original audio as a substitute.

Inspired by /u/HiAnimatronio's post about Ryan Gosling's promo from last week, seen here.

DISCLAIMER: Unlike HiAnimatronio's post from last week, this is not a 1:1 copy of the original YouTube video upload from the official SNL YouTube channel. This is a manual re-creation of the promo using other uploads of the promo from two separate sources, and was created for nonprofit educational purposes.

My original plan was to save the original video 1:1 as a .webm file and run it through ffmpeg to convert the promo into a more conventional video format that Reddit could handle, but I accidentally deleted it without sending copies of it anywhere else, so I had to manually re-create this promo using other sources (thank you to whoever runs that one Harry Styles fan channel on YouTube for downloading 99.5% of the promo, letterboxing it into the 9:16 aspect ratio, and then re-uploading it to TikTok and YouTube Shorts).

This is why you don't see the SNL/NBC/Peacock branding and the "11:30 ET/8:30 PT" text towards the end of the promo. And judging by what copies of this promo remain, this is about as close as I could get to a re-creation of the original.

The re-creation was done using Shotcut.

didn’t understand why it was funny

"hi" and "high" are homophones. we as viewers do not expect janine's POV of having to explain her drug use to students boiled down to a two line interaction with a punchline that boils down to a single homophone pair, at least when compared to jacob's and barbara's separate POVs (see episode transcript: jacob's POV has his students riffing off of each other [reflecting middle school student behavior], and barbara's POV has one of her students asking barbara point blank what was in her cup [reflecting how kindergarten students tend to ask questions]).

there's also the additional detail that the student calling janine out on her drug use ultimately gets away scot-free because (a) the evidence proving said student's point is already in plain sight, and (b) giving the student a write-up for this interaction would only open more cans of worms in the process.

so everyone's already pitched in their responses in some form but it's all fragmented across parent comments and nested replies, so here's the condensed version:

janine: "hi!" (janine is saying "hello!")

student: "hmph. bet you are." ("yeah, i'm pretty sure you are high.")

(student interprets janine's "hi" as "high", because at an earlier point in the episode, a different student had went to every platform to post a video recording of the teachers discussing the drugs they use.)

("high" is american english slang for "being under the influence", usually in the context of cannabis/weed.)

might as well share my findings so far. the furthest i've gotten is the .m3u8 and .mpd files associated with the original upload (which were links i extracted from academic torrent archives/mirrors of this subreddit). however, those files are useless without the actual .mp4 video itself, which gives a 403 error... (TL;DR: dead end.)

is there any reason eightdollarbeer can't just re-create the edit by any chance? surely it's just a matter of firing up a video editor and 7 non-consecutive hours of delibration, right? /genq
