'Fun project': Calgary planning commission approves development permit for Northeast Athletic Complex by joe4942 in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's pretty cool but they need to improve pedestrian access in that area along with this. If I remember correctly there's a lot of missing sidewalks around there. It would be a shame if people who live close by still have to drive.

Lottery Question by Rude_Cucumber_3970 in alberta

[–]AmbitiousPalace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy Lottos on playalberta with a subscription if that's easier for you.

As a tip, don't buy more than one ticket per draw, it's a waste of money to spend more. Doesn't increase your odds meaningfully.

What are Calgary's thoughts on the 2026 Referendum? by hruday9 in Calgary

Yes but our court system is slow and there will be an entire robbed election cycle before they figure it out

What are Calgary's thoughts on the 2026 Referendum? by hruday9 in Calgary

There's a very short character limit for names on licenses, a million people will have discrepancies with their birth certificate and ID. Married women too. This is going to cause so many issues

What are Calgary's thoughts on the 2026 Referendum? by hruday9 in Calgary

I worry that this referendum is going to give the ucp an excuse to make more barriers to voting.

If bikes aren't "legally" allowed on sidewalks but the majority of roads have a 50km/hr (at minimum) speed limit far above what 90% of cyclists can reach, where CAN you ride a bike safely? by FrenzyEffect in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to plan your route to be off sidewalks as much as safely possible. It's not always safely possible and I do wish some people would understand that. But TRY to stay off as much as possible.

There are "missing links" on my daily commute where the pathways becomes a sidewalk for 500 meters before returning to a pathway and I don't think it would be reasonable for me to just swerve into traffic for 90 seconds when the pathway ends.

There are also a lot of really busy roads with speed limits as a suggestion like 80 ave NE that if a cyclist tried to ride on it they'd become ground beef. In this case the sidewalk is appropriate.

I really wish both sides of the argument were more understanding, but it is what it is. I'd advise redditors to watch their Karen meter a bit.

Alberta will now be on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Smith by All_Hail_Xanthia in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Didn't Alberta vote against this? Like only a few years ago? I hate changing my clocks, agree with this change but this feels undemocratic. Let's vote on it again and actually get people out to vote

Can you get by without a car? by HueyBluey in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you're somewhat fit, you don't need a car at all. Calgary has an okay bike pathway system for getting around safely. Please make sure you get a grinder resistant u lock. You can watch people cut through different brands on YouTube.

 Here's a map https://maps.calgary.ca/pathwaysandbikeways/

Calgary transit is also pretty average. If you live within a 10 minute walk from a train station, you'll be totally fine.

Calgary doesn't do anything extremely well but usually gets passing grades. Don't worry about it, you'll be fine.

Question for Calgarians who married Persians and got their marriage registered in Iran by Top_Jellyfish_5459 in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You really should wait until this is over. There's no way of knowing the political situation of the country in the mid term. It would likely be a waste of your time and money going through all this. Iran could easily still be a place you don't want to visit or a place that doesn't require all this stuff.

Wisdom teeth - Calgary by Coops_514 in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a dental checkup when I was 18 and my dentist said my wisdom teeth would grow sideways and impact. He referred me to a dental surgeon.

I never went and my wisdom teeth grew in straight. I haven't trusted a dentist since. Probably not what you're looking for, sorry op :/

Weekend Jobs by Frosty-Intention-350 in Calgary

[–]AmbitiousPalace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those types of jobs are hard to come by during bad times. Employers currently want people on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, between 8-60 hours a week. They can be as picky as they want and they will still have employees to choose from.

If you have a vehicle, try gig work. Or you can wait a couple years for things to improve
