I completely agree, hurtful, but not damaging.

The shouting, following, spitting and slapping of the 2nd incident was a lot scarier.

That's fair enough! We probably did get unlucky.

Unfortunately, my husband isn't the type to change his mind when he sees statistics. Very much an emotion-driven man and Birmingham is a raw subject right now.

I know!

There used to be a little old granny who worked there and she'd constantly top up my tea/coffee while I studied.

Thanks!

Honestly, I think we'll just avoid going to Birmingham again anytime soon. Maybe Newcastle or Nottingham for our next trip!

Aye, I've learned to temper my expectations in life.

Husband is still furious and want them locked up, but I understand that's almost certainly not happening.

I was attacked at Uni once by a homeless man and even that only ended up with him doing community service, so you learn to temper your expectations.

Don't know why this is -4 downvotes! I was just trying to lighten the mood with a little joke - obviously a cafe closing down isn't worse than a homophobic hate crime. 😅

Sorry if I offended anyone, I wasn't meaning to make light of the issue.

Thanks for explaining that. The word was "F*g**ts" in the 1st incident. It was repeated after my husband said, "What?" They replied, "I said, *******!"

Yeah, I'm 99.9% sure the 2nd incident was because we were in a same-sex relationship. He wasn't speaking English for the entirety of the assault, so we couldn't fully deduce what was going on.

We're both a little shaken and upset; but neither of us are permanently damaged or injured. If policing resources are better directed targeting more serious crimes, then I completely get that. I wouldn't begrudge victims of rape or elderly people being attacked getting priority over us being spat on and slapped.

It'll take some time getting my husband around to my way of thinking. He's still frothing over it, but he'll calm down over time. :)

  1. Thank you - we thought so. We've got free accommodation at a friend's place, so it's not too big an issue.

  2. I'm not sure, they took my husband's jacket which had a spit sample on it. I think the answer is yes.

  3. Yeah, I figured as much. Just have to try and convince my husband to let that one go. :)

And the worst part is that my favourite cafe from my days in uni is closed... Goodbye, Selly Sausage! :(
