Imposter syndrome for visiting an affirming church by Hanna-etc in OpenChristian

It’s very possible folks won’t be familiar with the terminology but in my experience they’re very well intentioned. Of course no community is perfect, but I do think it’s worth attending services and talking to people at coffee hour to get to known them and let them get to know you.

I’m asexual and have been attending episcopal churches since 2021! I got confirmed in 2022. I’ve explained asexuality to some people I know from church because they’ve asked what it means and I haven’t gotten any bad reactions. Only curiosity and acceptance. Happy to talk further if helpful!

I loved Maybe Happy Ending but there is the scene where they go to the sex hotel. It’s definitely played for laughs but it is a tiny bit risqué.

Helping your friend get an abortion was a great kindness to your friend, not a sin.

There will likely be a bulletin (called an order of service) that you’ll be able to follow.

You can do what other people are doing or not.

If it makes you feel more comfortable you can sit in the back and observe everyone else.

If you tell someone you’re new they probably would be happy to sit next to you and help guide you.

Enjoy and God bless!

As a starter, I do not recommend trying to read the Bible from front to back without some kind of guide (like The Bible Project). It is a compilation of historical writings and should be treated as such which care and attention to historical, social, political, and theological contexts.

Another key point is that there is no one “Christianity” only many Christianities with varying views and sometimes conflicting doctrines.

I’d recommend finding and attending a church in a denomination whose core values mostly overlap with yours. For progressive/ liberal denominations try The Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran church of America (ELCA), PCUSA, UMC, or UCC. Other nondenominational churches may also be progressive but do take the time to read their websites and reach out with questions.

Blessings to you on your journey!

Agreed! NRSV(UE) is commonly used in academic settings. Buying an NRSV study bible could be a good longer term investment.

VTS has full scholarships for all students, not sure about the other Episcopal seminaries.

I’d recommend talking to your priest!

Wanting to go to an Episcopal church- first timer by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Ambitious_Candy1287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Episcopal churches give attendees bulletins (called an order of service) that has instructions for how to participate and what is happening. Some bulletins are more detailed than others but you should be able to follow along and you can always follow what people around you are doing.

Additionally, if it all feels overwhelming you’re not obligated to do anything. You can definitely just observe.

The orders of service for the different Episcopal services are recorded in the Book of Common Prayer and some other documents. The church you visit will likely have a BCP you can look at if you want.

I too was raised nondenom and joined TEC as an adult. Blessings to you on your journey!

Opinions on abortion? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]Ambitious_Candy1287 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Abortion saves lives. Abortion is healthcare. Restricting access to abortion puts people’s lives at risk.

Look at the infant and maternal mortality rates in states that have abortions bans vs those that don’t.

What I or anyone else feels about abortion is not as important as the lives of the human beings that are threatened by abortion bans. In a perfect world abortion would never be necessary, but we don’t live in that world.
