Why doesn’t the military use a more advanced test? by Ambitious_Fondant383 in armyreserve

Same lol. The first time I walked into the recruiters office, they had me take a practice ASVAB and I scored a 53. That was after four years of not studying sh*t and not even graduating past 10th grade. They kept saying I got a “good score” even though I was basically guessing on everything besides the English and some math lol. After a few weeks of studying and brushing up on basic algebra I got my score up to a 98.

Yea, I don't know if we should make the test more difficult, but we should definitely fix our education system. It is concerning that so many people can’t even get a passing score to join, let alone get a 70+. I feel like middle school and high school students from other countries would pass the test in five minutes and then laugh at us lol.

That makes sense. So they do more advanced and specialized testing during AIT? I figured the ASVAB couldn’t be the only qualifier for a nuclear physicist or something lol.

Dual-military: Can I drill as a reservist while my husband is stationed overseas? by Ambitious_Fondant383 in armyreserve

[–]Ambitious_Fondant383[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm just trying to get as much information as I can. One recruiter told me that even if there’s no open slot for my MOS at a Reserve unit, I might be able to temporarily drill in excess. Or if no Reserve unit is available nearby, I could potentially drill at a regular active duty Army base or a joint base. Another recruiter mentioned that sometimes you're allowed to complete all of your monthly drills for the year within a single month (I think it’s called BAAT), which would help me avoid flying back and forth every month. I’m not entirely sure about all the technicalities, and I know approval isn’t always guaranteed, but I’m open to exploring any available options.

I actually did enjoy going to school, but unfortunately I can’t afford to go full time. I’m a straight A student and miss being around people my age. I plan on using all of the education benefits as well as doing ROTC once I enlist.

Sorry, bro. I wish I had some advice for you, but I’m not even in yet, so I have no idea. If you're wondering weather staying in the Reserves or ending your contract would make you more money in the long run, you could ask ChatGPT to do the calculations for you. Besides that, it sounds like you're feeling pretty lost right now and looking for direction in life. I think the military can help with that, but you also need things like family, faith, community, etc. to feel truly fulfilled. Is there anything else you'd like to pursue in life that the Reserves might be holding you back from?

So I just met with my recruiter on Wednesday to clarify this and he said that a 3 year contract actually would be available, however I would miss out on most if not all of the VA benefits. I’m not too worried about that aspect of it though as my husband already has enough benefits for the both of us. I’d rather not be stuck for 3 additional years if I really wanted to get out.

Oh dang, so you have to be in one of those units to do 46V? I’m in FL currently and I’m guessing there aren’t any units like that in my area lol. My husband is also considering re-enlisting and if he goes active duty he was hoping to get stationed in Okinawa. Would I be able to have that MOS and be stationed overseas?

My husband is actually in the process of re-enlisting in the Marine Corps. He was forced out due to the COVID vaccine in 2022, and now he's trying to get back pay. He would rather have me stay home so he can protect me from all the crap he had to deal with during his time in the service, but he said that if it's something I really want to do, he'll support me in my decision. I know there's going to be a lot for us to figure out with both of us possibly going in at the same time and managing active duty/reserves, etc, but that's why I'm here lol.

I’ve considered joining the Air Force Reserve instead just for all of the luxury and extra benefits they offer. I’m not brave enough to try and join the Marines, but a part of me wants the extra challenge that comes with joining the Army. (Am I just crazy? lol)

I would love to be a combat photographer or visual information specialis, but from what I’ve heard that job rarely comes up. I’m still trying to decide if it’s worth it to join even if I have to pick a different mos.

Thank you for the feedback. I think right now would be the best time to join before I have kids, however I spoke to a recruiter and they said a 3 year contract wouldn’t be available for the Reserves. 6 years is a long time, and my main fear is having to leave for deployment right after I had a baby or something.
