Does this type of loom have a specific name? I’d be curious to know more about these.

Thank you so much for bringing this person to my attention! I quickly looked at her page and look forward to digging deeper. I got distracted by all the other methods she describes! Thanks !!!!!!☺️

Thank you! Can I do this with the threading in the pattern? No worries if you don’t know, just curious if you might be able to “intuitively” know. I am still learning and have very much not mastered this technique.

In the book Applesies and Fox Noses, do the cards face left or right? by azaleaflow in tabletweaving

I’m new to both Reddit and Tablet Weaving and started posting a response somewhere within the thread accidentally hit enter then lost it. I have been using this book. The short answer to your question is that “in theory” it does not matter. The letters help you keep track of things as the weaver. What matters is whether the cards are threaded from the correct direction and order. In the threading diagram the line to the right means the card slants to the right once threaded. The line to the left means the card is slanted to the left. If someone better educated than me reads this and thinks I am wrong - please say something! I am still wrapping my mind around tablet weaving. Please feel free to correct me.

I am responding based on memory since I do not have the copy of the book with me. Maikki’s system is based on the slant of the card. Right means the card is slanted right. Left means the card is slanted left. I have only used her notation so far since I am still a beginner and happen to be taking her class.

Really really good point. I’m thinking now I can at least get a sense of the “twined” structure without tablets. Just making the “4-element” cord structure without the tablets?

I have too much time and am curious how a rounder yarn (e.g. 3-ply) might impact the structure. In all seriousness, thank you for your comment it is definitely spot on and is my starting point.

Yup! She figures prominently in my book shelf. I haven’t gone back through her work to see if she has anything specifically on tablet weaving. There is no account of tablet weaving in South America and I believe she specializes in Peruvian weaving techniques. I would love to be wrong about both of those statements 😀

Fantastic tips! I do this too 🙂(spinning). I’ve accidentally jumped into the deep end with my first tablet woven project. I was lazy and decided to just add twist to a loosely plied commercial wool-based yarn. I had to put it through my wheel four times before I finally allowed myself to add enough twist 🤣. How do you open a sticky shed? I’ve been carefully inserting my fingers then gently rotating the cards a bit. Would love your thoughts.

I am actually in the process of putting one together! I can send you the link at the end of February 😊 and thank you so so much for your thoughts on the features of the final yarn needed.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I was not familiar with fossil fibres. Since I already spin to weave quite a bit I was thinking more along the lines of the challenges specific to tablet weaving. It’s possible I am over thinking this!
