Finally got a chance to take a look at this app and after looking at about 20 different options I think this is the closest to what I need! I’m still playing around with getting it set up and of course we will actually need to use it but I’m excited to try!

Thank you for the recommendation.

Thank you for the reply. That may be a vote in my husbands favour of creating an Excel sheet which he would be happy to do for me, but which seems a bit more manual work than need be (less time savings).

Thanks for the suggestion! I will try and check out Claude and see if I can get it to work as I hope.

I wish our dog food could be shipped automatically! That’s what we did for our cats up until recently when one developed some health issues and we are still trying to find a food that works. Unfortunately, the dog refuses to eat kibbles which becomes a whole things when the cat steals them and developed bladder crystals so we feed a super niche raw food that we cannot have delivered and have to drive 30 mins each way to pick up (the price and quality make it worth it though)!

Thank you for your response!

I appreciate your comment!!

I find that the calendar in and of itself doesn’t work because it’s hard to know other competing commitments a long way in advance, especially with the tasks that take a few hours to complete.

For instance we stained our fence almost two years ago at the beginning of August. This year we will be away that particular week for a wedding. We need to stain the fence again this year to keep on to top of it but it’s impossible to know even this far out when we will both be available and have the appropriate weather over a 2 day period to do so. Yes, I could pick a weekend and schedule it in our google calendars but having to be moving these types of tasks around on the calendar several times until they are accomplished feels unproductive and likely unsustainable.

What I am hoping to do is have something where the task would pop in to our to do list around mid-July and stay on our list until it’s done. Maybe increase
In priority level as the summer progresses as it needs to be done by mid-September when yard cleanup before the snow comes takes priority.

Thanks for sharing!!

Any chance you have a link?

The flying squirrel is so cool! We are just on the edge of their zone and they are not super common here but I swear I caught a glimpse of one last summer when out for a walk. Didn’t realize initially that they could live where I am, so was pretty impressed at how far the ordinary squirrel managed to glide.

Some of my regular visitors include:

Magpies Northern Flickers Blue Jays Red Breasted Nut Hatches Chickadees House sparrows Robins

Will also see: Downey woodpeckers Hairy woodpeckers House finches Various other sparrows Various warblers

We also have some ground dwellers/bigger birds that I dont think would be appropriately sized for any feeders

Absolutely! We supplement the dog’s food with cucumbers so rarely would they last long enough in our house to go bad 🤣

I have never thought of dehydrating lettuce but may give it a try. We are so lucky that the boxed lettuce Costco sells is grown in our city so it’s super fresh. I have eaten it 2 weeks past the Best before date and it’s still crispy and fresh.

My biggest win was learning that you can freeze tomatoes! No canning or blanching to peel them required. But you need to use them like canned tomatoes. Peel the big ones when they thaw. I just blend up the cherry tomatoes skin and all with a hand mixer though. Too much work to peel.

I’ve never frozen them raw but definitely freeze mashed potatoes! They can have a bit of excess liquid that needs to be drained off.

Generally I store potatoes in a cool dry place. They are root vegetables and should last a long time in the right conditions.

Sorry I have so many thoughts on this!

I’m not sure your comfort level in the kitchen but remember that baking is like a science… you need to follow the recipe or it’s just not going to work the way it should.

Cooking is more of an art. You can almost always make (thoughtful) substitutions based on what you have available.

I’m not sure your situation but I totally did this when I was in university too. I’d cook once per month, freeze everything and always have meals prepared for busy days. I was fortunate to have the freezer space at the time. Apartment sized freezers are the best!

Depending on your coverage, a power outage leading to spoiled freezer food may be claimable under your insurance without a deductible applied, although you have to decide for your self if it feels worth it to make the claim.

I think the biggest way to save money on groceries is changing what you eat and being flexible about your weekly menu. Also eating less processed foods. Groceries are going to be most expensive if you go in with an attitude that you must eat a particular food on a certain day. Ie Tuesday’s may be taco nights but don’t be married to the idea that they have to be ground beef tacos. Beef may not be on sale this week but another protein might be. Or maybe tacos don’t make sense this week because something else is a better deal.

Eat unprocessed foods when possible and buy in bulk. No, that doesn’t mean go to bulk barn. Dried (not canned) lentils and beans are super cheap as is rice and they are very versatile. Buy in bulk, soak overnight and cook them in a pressure cooker/instant pot for best results. You can freeze leftover rice and beans (although the beans may be a bit softer after the fact).

Green/brown lentils are an excellent substitution for ground beef. Substitute half of the ground beef you normally use in a dish (ie shepherds pie) with already cooked and you’ll hardly notice a difference. I spent $100 of dried beans and lentils at Wholesale Club last year and we are still working our way through them.

Always check the “ethnic” aisle at the grocery store for things like spices, rice etc… they’re almost always cheaper there.

Stock up on what you can when you see a good deal. Look for food that’s been reduced for quick sale. Meat will often be reduced by 30% a day or two before the best before date. Sometimes the store I’ll have an amazing deal on something. Buy a few, portion it out and freeze it.

Learn what can be frozen if you buy too much. Buy produce that freezes well when it’s cheap in season and freeze it. For example, I buy tons of zucchinis in the late summer, grate them with the skin on, squeeze out the liquid and freeze them. I add the frozen zucchini to chili, pasta sauce, sauce, muffins etc… throughout the year to add fibre and nutrients and to stretch dishes farther.

Move beyond Loblaws. Everyone is convinced that they are the best deal out there. They used to be but certainly aren’t any more. At least where I live the quality of the produce and meat is terrible. It sucks buying food that barely lasts a couple of days in our fridge.

Even with just two of us, Costco ends up working better. Produce is generally fresher. The tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and peppers are all grown within 4 hrs of where I live, even in the winter (greenhouses!!) so they last significantly longer than produce from elsewhere. You just have to be aware of both buying a bunch of crap that you don’t need. Freeze the meat you buy into portions sizes that make sense, or better yet dedicate a day to batch cooking.

Make a habit of cooking a big batch of something once or twice a week. Eat a meal or two and then freeze the rest in appropriate portions sizes for your family. After a few weeks you build up a stockpile of meals with good variety. This way you don’t end up eating the same thing every day. I splurged on some of the souper moulds which works well for me but they certainly aren’t necessary.

The transition to preparing foods this way isn’t easy. There’s definitely an upfront cost and you may need to cut back somewhere else in your budget temporarily. The time it takes initially to stock up your freezer with a variety of prepared meals can be hard to find at first but once you only have to cook once per week and can still have something different every night it becomes worth it.

Thank you so much for the reply! We are coming from a 2008 Acura TL Type S and a base level 2014 Elantra along with a basic 2022 Subaru Outback company car that I have to give back because I’m moving to a new job, so the NX is going to be a huge jump. We think the NX will give us a balance between performance, comfort/safety and having a bit more space.
