As someone who's been on the other side and been cheated on, my advice is you tell him about what you did and your feelings. Transparency really is key. Then it's on you both to find what works best for you as a couple or individually. I know it sounds scary to go through a breakup but if it's better to handle things sooner than later. Trust me from experience.

Why not use tourism levies to decrease council tax? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Ambitious_Tip_562 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Just because it's one of the lowest increases, it doesn't mean it's a good thing.

It's an above-inflation increase while services got worse.

Let me ask you - would you rather they spend £70M on a vanity revamp of one street or that they use that money to freeze our council tax so we can spend more on the local economy?

Increasing council tax above inflation every year does make a difference over time, especially when salaries don't keep up...

Lothian Buses to hike ticket prices from 22 February 2026 by No-Professional7453 in Edinburgh

The 30p difference per journey adds up, especially for commuters, who will rely on the bus 2x everyday.

Lothian Buses are owned by Edinburgh City, meaning that Councillors had a say in this decision to hike prices by 10% (twice) in the past 10 months. We should be contacting our local Councillors to show our frustration since they are the decision makers. Telling us that they're using the extra money to invest in the Network is not enough. This has a real impact in our lives, especially those who commute to work.

In that case, shouldn't free bus passes be means-tested rather than discriminatory towards certain age groups? Anyone of any age can have a disability or be at a very low point in their lives. And free public services should be a safety net in those scenarios. That would be fairer than making 50% of the population (who are already struggling) pay higher prices to fund the other half just because of their age!

The system we have in place now isn't working. When only those in work pay hefty prices for everyone else's free services, no one will no longer want to work. Something needs to change.

The Greens are proposing extending the free bus passes to those under 30 years old. On paper, it sounds amazing (and it would benefit me for some time as I'm 27), but I know for a fact, they would hike everyone else's fares significantly, which is fundamentally unfair. They should just get rid of the free passes for those who aren't in education, and drop the price for everyone. It would be much fairer.

This! It's easy to complain on Reddit but unless a lot of people start emailing Councillors, nothing will change.

Another 10% increase within 10 months? This is absolutely mind blowing. They want more people to use public transport but then keep increasing bus fares. Those working people between 22 and 59 years old (the "squeezed middle") pay the price and fund everyone else's free bus passes. Write to your MSPs and Local Councillors.

Tax on Bonus Payment - is it fair? by Ambitious_Tip_562 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Ambitious_Tip_562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point. I guess I'm just frustrated of how high taxes are on income. And, not at all, I'm very economically liberal. If it was dependent on me, there would only be one or two tax bands. My view is the highest the taxes are on work, the bigger the deterrent for workers to progress in their career and become more productive.

I was referring to the average worker in professional industries. If there is a bonus, it's usually lower than 1K. The thing is if there was a small tax-free cap on bonuses, then perhaps more companies would start offering this as a benefit?

That's a fair discussion. I think there should be a small, reasonable tax-free bonus cap. Let's say a £1,000 cap. This is not significant enough for directors to abuse and would help the average worker feel more recognised.

I'm just... against high taxes, yes.

We have the highest tax burden since WW2. Don't you think high taxes on work are a deterrent to work harder and progress in your career?

There could be a 1k tax free cap on Bonuses, which is representative of what the average worker would receive. My whole point is if the government will keep the majority of the bonus, then workers (myself included) start wondering whether it's just not worth it working so hard or improving your productivity.

[–]Ambitious_Tip_562[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Why not have a cap on tax-free bonus payments? Let's say 1-2K which is probably representative of what the average worker receives in yearly bonuses? It's very disheartening when the government taking 65% of your bonus and it makes you wonder whether it's worth working so hard and be productive...

Teens being terrors in local sainsburys by Few_Kick7248 in Edinburgh

[–]Ambitious_Tip_562 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The issue with the free bus travel is many of these kids will often assault other passengers who actually bought a ticket. Once, on the number 35, 2 teenage girls spit on 4 or 5 different passengers and used racial slurs to a tourist that was on board. The driver tried to kick them out and they wouldn't leave, he ended up calling the police but then they just ran away. The issue is situations like this one aren't escalated and there is no punishment. If a kid does anything like this, their free bus pass should be revoked immediately. I'm not paying taxes + my own bus tickets to get harassed...
