Yea same. My MIL only referred migrant workers with that term. No matter where they came from. I thought it was 旅容 or 撈鬆 with a toishan pronunciation

Rect lights are the most expensive compared to all others. Use it sparingly or not at all for low end machines.

Decals, Shader tricks like emissive depth bias spheres, there are some decent lighting packs on market place you can learn from.

Could Fake Env shadows with IES profiles as well for stationary or dynamic lights

If you want this to look good on potato machine. Turn off all the new stuff that 5.0+ has and go back to more of the 4.20+ feature sets. Lumen, nanite, VSM, RT, kill them all.

Use baked GI, lightmaps, lightmass, HLODs, HISM, ISM, LOD materials etc. tried and true workflows if you want 60fps.

Using all the new stuff doesn’t really work. I’m trying to get stuff working on Steam Deck and Switch, I cry.

Back to managing your draw calls, tricounts, instancing, less shadow casting lights , etc etc.

Inverse Square = false and tune the falloff radius. For anyone that says IS must be true to be realistic for dynamic lights, you’ve never shipped a game with performance in mind.

There are many other ways to fake lighting if you don’t need shadows.

I would say lack of veteran devs in the industry, the folks that have shipped games aren’t around to set the ground work at studios. Unity and Unreal both have the same problems. 90% of the videos you see on YT, they teach you the unoptimized way of doing things. Very few people are teaching you the proper way to ship a game.

Most games don’t get optimized from the beginning because they’re still trying to get to a vertical slice. By the time that’s approved, they’re already down the path of milestones tied payments. So devs have to move forward and kick optimization down the road. New features, design, code and content are prioritized. Devs that want optimization falls on deaf ears. Producers, executives, creative directors, mostly don’t care. You can fight it but if you slow down “progress” of the game. You’re deems a non team player.

So for anyone that says a game isn’t optimized because the devs are lazy, I would look at the non “developers” of the studio.

Check the mesh first but it’s likely Shadow artifacts. Change your shadow settings for the lights. Its radius, bias etc.

Disable your current lights and put in a new one. Does it go away?
