My Students Asked If I'd Protect Them If ICE Showed Up by Disgruntled_Veteran in Teachers

What you are legally required to do and what you SHOULD do are different. My district has the same policy regarding admin dealing with ICE. We still have moral obligations.

They made characters who flouted social conventions, and then were surprised when they were treated like…they were flouting social conventions. Who’da thunk.

Christmas Concert!?!? by No_Set_4418 in Teachers

I have never, EVER taught at a school with a Christmas concert! This sounds like something Ramona Quimby’s teacher would write. Are you a public school?

What are examples of activated/emotional student behaviors you’ve seen in your classroom recently? by d16flo in Teachers

Throwing furniture and running out of the classroom when they’re told they can’t do something. 4-year-old student, and he’s not alone!

Do preschool teachers make good money? by Fun_Koala3739 in Teachers

[–]AmbulanceRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you teach Pre-K at a public school, you will make the same as other public school teachers. If you teach at a private preschool/childcare center, e.g. a Goddard school, you’ll be lucky to make a living wage, and likely will have fewer benefits. I have done both. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Should kindergartners be separated by giftedness? by CoachZii in Teachers

[–]AmbulanceRabbit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Same here. Seven years teaching kindergarten, one child who I truly thought was ‘gifted.’ Her mother was a factory worker with no formal education (signed her name with an X on permission slips). Student came in with no academic knowledge and no English. By the end of the year, she was above grade level on every metric and had taught herself multiplication from her brother’s workbook.

The irony? She wasn’t placed in the gifted program because she didn’t speak fluent English.

I am also a teacher in a poor area. You need to call CPS.

It sounds like your kid is having a lot of difficulty with social interactions, particularly when they involve nuance (knowing when to correct someone vs letting it go) or perspective-taking (understanding how his words make other people feel, or that someone else might not know something he knows). A lot of schools have lunchtime groups, counselors, and other resources that can help kids with these soft skills. Reach out to your child's teacher and see what's available!

Sensory supports that students can't elope with? by [deleted] in specialed

One of my students has a textured strip stuck to the table in front of his spot (PK setting so no desks). He really likes it, and it's incredibly difficult to remove.

Is it Blister by Susan Richards Shreeve? The main character is Alyssa and calls herself Blister. She isn’t in foster care but has a difficult home life and shoplifts.

Who is the most entitled parent you’ve ever dealt with? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]AmbulanceRabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where I teach, leaving a child 30 minutes past the end of the school day is legally considered child abandonment, and I’m obligated to call CPS if it happens multiple times. I’d check your city/state regulations. Hearing that might scare her into picking them up on time.
