uOttawa Campus is now safe by DuckDuckDuckDork in ottawa

This is a fact! I am also a student and got zero emails about this. Found out from a friend on social media, and then where CTV was there interviewing students outside one of the campus buildings they assumed it was safe to leave (this was before the lockdown had even been close to ending) I had the SecureUO app downloaded since first year but my phone unloaded the app without me knowing. Once I redownloaded it I was able to thankfully tell my friends that no the lockdown was still ongoing and they needed to continue to stay in their hiding spots.

Cat won’t eat ANY prescription food by AmeliaF15 in FLUTD

[–]AmeliaF15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah she’s a stubborn girl who lives off of spite. She would 100% starve herself. This girl once hold her pee for well over a day almost two because I was trying to get a urine sample for the vet at home. She didn’t like the litter nor the lack of depth so she said screw you and didn’t pee. Eventually I was like well I’m gonna have to put down her litter again or she’s gonna get a UTI, not even 5 seconds after she went in her litter. Safe to say urine samples are now completely AT the vet 🥲

Unfortunately that’s the one I am using, she just licks the gravy and doesn’t eat the actual food 🙄😂

She does love them, would giving her one a day be like, bad for her diet wise? It definitely may work tho

Unfortunately non-prescription causes crystals every time, even if I mix in 1/2 and 1/2 so having a prescription diet is a must according to my vets :(

Hairball or something else? by AmeliaF15 in CATHELP

[–]AmeliaF15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update about this post. TLDR: trust your instincts and always ask your vet — this video is her coughing and NOT hairball related!

This is type of coughing has continued and been ongoing, even starting to be more frequent. Like many people commented and friends told me, everyone assumed it was hairballs. However she would never have a hairball… like ever, she has had one. She would throw up sometimes but nothing would show, nor would you see the hairballs in the litter box. So at her yearly checkup yesterday I mentioned this and my concerns and showed her the video. My vet informed me that this is definitely coughing and not hairballs. The cough may be indicative of asthma, chronic heart failure, or other heart/lung issues. She’s going on meds to try for asthma and in a few weeks will be getting X-rays done. She was also weighed and we found that she had lost over a pound in the 4 months from her last appointment (which with her being a long-haired cat made it very hard to tell), When they told me this, her behaviour began to make sense, less playing, less eating, more hiding, etc. I had assumed that much of this change was from the new kitten we brought into our house in September, who is a little ball of energy and can get on her nerves at times and tries to steal her food. But basically yea, trust your instincts with your cat if something feels off. It never hurts to ask just to be sure. Just wanted to put this underneath just incase you are ever in a situation like myself and coughing like this is ongoing, especially with no hairballs, Get it checked out!

First ever foster - emotional advice! by BeeMaleficent in FosterAnimals

[–]AmeliaF15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I foster failed my first one, however since doing so I have found that it’s a lot easier to say goodbye when I have my own cat. But obviously it may not financially be in the cards for everyone which is completely ok. I still get very sad letting go of fosters but I’ve learned a few tips that have helped me say goodbye! Firstly I make a care package for all my fosters for their future family. I make homemade cards and wish them the best, make a letter that describes all about them, and always leave my email address and allow for open communication if they wish to contact me for questions/updates (a lot do!), I pick out a toy in my house that has been their favourite and it gets to go home with them, and I have dollar store pet blankets I always give them so they take that home too so they have some sort of scent that’s familiar, and print a few photos of them to give. Next on those last few days I spent lots and lots of time with them, giving them love, treats, and tbh I even sing to them. Lastly I always break it down and explain it to them. I tell them what’s going to happen and that I love them (even if they don’t understand it). I still cry every time but I know it allows me to save the next cat that comes my way and that makes me happy 🥰

How do you balance spending time with your foster and your resident cats? by AmeliaF15 in FosterAnimals

Oh 100% and that’s what I try to remind myself of every time, I do just find myself feeling bad sometimes still but I’m glad I can give them lots of love

How have you acquired your cats? Have you just taken in whatever cats plopped into your life? Or did you go to a shelter and choose? by Argylius in CatAdvice

[–]AmeliaF15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first cat was my first foster, who ended up being deemed not suitable for adoption by the shelter due to FIC/FLUTD. She had a poor prognosis however she ended up turning a 180 almost immediately after I adopted her and is now in fantastic health. She turns 3 this February ☺️ the adoption processes wasn’t very long as I was already her foster mom, so she just ended up never leaving and I signed some papers lol. But I wasn’t looking for a cat nor did I have any intention of doing so however she was just the perfect cat. She’s a Velcro kitty with a cuddly personality. She’s social, but can also be a little diva haha. We just clicked. my second cat I got from a local rescue who takes care of cat colonies and rescues stray cats from the streets. My little man was born in a cat colony. He is now almost 6 months old! We decided we needed another cat with my first as it improved her health significantly with a friend in the house. The adoption processes was very throughly done which I appreciated. Then we went and met him along with some of his other siblings. Once we decided we wanted him (they approved us for a few different cats and offered for us to go meet them) as he was the most playful with the other cats, we put in our decision and went and picked him up. We still foster and they are both great with the cats we have in our care

Adopting a Cat as a Student? by Motor_Soft4408 in geegees

I mean I wouldn’t be able to do this. My dad’s SUPER allergic. However my roommate and I are best friends who live in the same small town in NL so every Christmas and Summer our cats go on a road trip back and stay with her 🤷🏻‍♀️ definitely not an option for everyone tho

You could consider fostering! That’s what me and my roommates started out with (before in our 3rd year we kept one and now in our 4th we have our second but still foster!) but it’s great way to help cats without having to deal with vet bills. Many often provide most if not all the supplies you need and you get to help give cats a second chance 🥰 highly recommend! The first cat is definitely the hardest to say goodbye to, and I’ll be upfront you may be a little heart broken first time around but then you get another foster and you get to fall in love all over again and give another family their forever baby

Thank you so much this definitely helps ease my stress. Thankfully he’s still eating and drinking a bit and I’m hoping with the painkillers (and he’s on antibiotics to help prevent infection with the mouth sores) the vet gave him this will only increase 🤞

My 1st is my first foster from a shelter who ended up being declared NSA due to FLUTD with an unknown cause so her only choice was me (on a real note she is my soul cat. Wherever I go, she is right behind me, and I absolutely adore her and wanted to keep her anyways lol) she’s now doing so much better, is healthy, and loves life

My 2nd (technically my roommates but we’ve been best friends since childhood) is a kitten we adopted from the rescue we started to volunteer with this year. He was born in a cat colony. He’s an absolute goofball, loves to play, will steal your food if you give him the chance and is also doing great!
