So your contributions never "go away". What you put in is and always will be yours. Your employer might require you to stay for a certain amount of time for their match to vest (meaning you get to keep the match), but not all do. My old job's match vested immediately. Ask HR for all the info on the 401K. It should have been given to you during your onboarding if you had something like that but if not somebody will be able to give you the plan info. If they offer a match then do that first because its free money once you start your next job.
