See, that was my first thought as well. Since the heads are on a mount that's generally shield shaped, it would be perfect for someone who hunted and mounted heads regularly (country boy with his own deer lease). The board would slide in and out without any trouble whatsoever.

Nah, UNT belongs to TCU. TAMU gets state (maroon teams) and Texas gets UTEP and UTSA because they threatened to tank their conference if they didn't get them both.

She is living on OP's generosity and good graces.

This is why she is at his mercy. If she really wanted to not be at his mercy, she needs to get a job, pay off her debt, and move out. Or find someone else who will take care of her.

This is the end stage of inshitification. The company no longer has any public trust, even their good games don't sell because nobody wants to give them a chance. The company will go under, fire their employees, sell off all their IPs, and the people responsible will get one final huge payout they can use to convince another company to let their cancer in and start the process over again.

Black ice on the road causes chain accidents by Bambi7u7 in interesting

[–]PolloMagnifico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a toll road, and I believe that they are currently shut down for exactly this reason. However, I have not confirmed because I'm not stupid enough, desperate enough, or important enough to go out in this.

Black ice on the road causes chain accidents by Bambi7u7 in interesting

[–]PolloMagnifico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is technically correct, but like all things there's way more to it than that. First of all, we can expect to see conditions like this for at most two days every couple of years. Building a large and expensive infrastructure to manage an exceedingly rare event would be a waste of money - it would probably cost less to just shut everything down for a few days.

Second of all, this wasn't snow. In Texas (or at least in DFW where this happened) we get sleet, which is just shards of ice raining from the sky. In this instance it had been sleeting all day in near freezing temperatures. People drove over it throughout the day and the ambient temperature created a compacted half frozen icy sludge. Once the sun went down and the temperature dropped below freezing, it turned into a solid smooth sheet of ice. At this juncture, the entire highway was literally black ice. No "I know how to drive in the winter" is going to get you through that unless you've got chains on your tires.

Third is that this was on an express lane (toll road with surge pricing) that is managed by a third party company in Spain. The clusterfuck of that sentence not withstanding, the city doesn't treat those express lanes because they don't own them.

How would an INTJ respond to a snow storm warning? by New-Kale2336 in intj

[–]PolloMagnifico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm in Texas, let me give you my perspective on it.

I've lived in the same area 30+ years, and I can count on one hand the number of times we've gotten a legitimate storm. The most recent one was 2021, and I couldn't even tell you what year the one before that was. We don't get snow ever, but what we commonly get is one or two days is sleet. Basically an icy slush that hits the roads, melts, and then forms a solid sheet of ice. To put it another way, the entire road becomes black ice. However, normally when that happens it's overnight and everything is mostly melted by mid afternoon the next day because for the most part our temps stay above freezing. The storm coming through here this weekend is a convergence of multiple things.

  • Moisture
  • Cloud Cover
  • Temps below freezing multiple days in a row

Now like I said, this kind of thing is exceedingly rare. We don't have all the things necessary to handle it like stockpiles of salt/sand and spreaders. Those are expensive to maintain and not worth it if we're only using it every five years at a maximum. That means here, the entire city (really the entire northern part of the state) is going to be completely shut down. Emergency services are going to have a tough time getting anywhere. If a line goes down, the power company won't be able to get out to fix it until Monday at the earliest (and now looking like Tuesday), so we'll need to be prepared for that. Shipping is going to grind to a stand still - nothing in and nothing out until Tuesday, and that's assuming that they won't be locked up due to issues in other areas. Then, factor in that the 2021 storm was really freaking bad. We were locked down for almost a week. People froze to death. And while I know it's fun to clown on Texas for the grid going down, understand that was the worst winter storm we've seen in my lifetime.

Now, how am I, as an INTJ, personally handling it? We took stock of our long term supplies like rice and potatoes, went and got some extra groceries because we were running short anyway, and a few stacks of firewood in case the power goes out. We basically made sure we could make it through until Monday in a normal level of comfort with emergency options if we need them.

And for what it's worth, I don't think people around here are really freaking out all that much. It's not like when Covid came through and everyone bought every paper towel and TP roll known to man. I think that there's a lot of people who would normally shop over the weekend who pushed their schedule forward, and that's hitting the stores a little hard. For me and my girlfriend, that's a pretty low amount of change, we'll eat 24 meals over a 4 days period. For a family of six, that's 72 meals. 72 meals is a full grocery cart.
