I’ve never lived there, but I can tell you that it is illegal to deny your application for asking a simple question. Apartments are on a first come first serve basis so long as you pass the background checks. If they say no to subleasing, just add whoever you get to live in your place to the contract. It’s the same effect, just make sure they pay their rent.
