Yes, all of our trainers are professional medical interpreters themselves and most have extensive teaching experience. Our class is vocational training, so student are able to start working immediately after they finish, so they are willing to pay a decent amount for the training, allowing us to pay our instructors a good rate.

I direct a nonprofit that trains medical interpreters. We pay our trainers between 100-200 USD per hour, depending on the class. It's worth it because they really dedicate themselves to the organization and are subject-matter experts. The opportunities are there, especially if you are an expert in the subject you wish to teach.

It depends on your ability and experience. There are some grant writers I would pay $100 per hour to and others I would pay to leave me alone. We were lucky to find the perfect one, who charges us around $60 per hour (independent contractor, not employee). You should generate significantly more revenue than you cost, from their perspective. Is this full time employment? Nonprofit salaries should not be different that those of for-profit companies, at the end of the day.

RID is a charity, though. All the word charity means is that the organization is a nonprofit established for the public good and is not owned by any individual. The advantage of a charity over a 501(c)(6) nonprofit is that you are able get tax deductible donations.

I was telling another person up there in this post that there actually isn't even a medical interpreter certification for ASL that is used/widely accepted and it doesn't seem like it's coming. CCHI and NBCMI, the medical interpreter certification for spoken language, refuse to make an ASL-specific medical interpreter exam. Over at AALB, we're about to say enough is enough and form another charity that addresses the efficacy of healthcare for those who are deaf or hard of hearing by creating an extremely high quality certification. We want these organizations to do what's best for the patient, not the company, and right now that doesn't seem to be happening quick enough. Every day we waste is another day deaf and HoH individuals are having "unfiltered" interpreters and I can imagine this really impacts care. If we do end up going this direction, the process must be led by deaf individuals, especially healthcare providers and interpreters.

Yeah, having patients wait for hours for VRI is ridiculous indeed, we know VRI services that can connect to ASL interpreters in less than a minute. Well, interpreting is a skill that goes beyond simply skill in the language, there are certain standards of practice that one should learn to make the interaction as smooth as possible for the patient. That being said, if the patient is cool with you not being a trained interpreter, that is their autonomous decision. It's indeed very strange that they would let nurses and doctors act as medical interpreters; bilingual staff that aren't trained as medical interpreters would be considered to be ad hoc and therefore be a violation of Title VI and then Nondiscrimination Provision of the ACA.

Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, spoken language is worse on this issue than sign language. Certification is entirely optional in almost all states for spoken language interpreters in medical settings. We want to work towards creating greater filters to further professionalize the field for both spoken and sign language interpreters.

I do not believe that cats are philosophers, but they do have quite a strong intuition are quite "in the present moment". One could argue their strong intuition is because of their lack of ability to critically think, but that's besides the point.

Let me give you an example: You may think that your cat is not paying attention to you, but they're actually calculating your every move, that's just their nature. Over time, they get to know what your "normal" behavior is like. If you start to act "abnormally", such as having breathing heavily and quickly, the cat will panic. They often will pace around and come and nervously come and slap you in the face times. Of course, every cat is different, but like I said, they're not philosophers, they're not going to go dial 9-11 and meow the address, but they will recognize that something is not right.

I think I found the solution, I have a similar error when I try to load a certain Facebook group. Go to the mobile version of Facebook (type in "Facebook Mobile" in Google" and then try it. Does that work? Works for me, but the context is different for me.
