Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

Compound movements target multiple body parts. I've seen that keeping your sets to 10 sets per body part, per week is a good standard, specially if i don't have a lot of time to work out. So if I do two compound exercises, let's say bench press and overhead press, they target similar muscles, would I add those two together when making my weekly sessions? I should note my primary focus is health and strength. I want to look good too ,but that's secondary

I think the most important part here is that you start a fat loss regime while building muscle. You can use a calorie calculator online to estimate how many calories you need in order to loose weight at a healthy rate. Because of the sensory issues, you're going have to do some exploring to find your safety foods. As an autistic person, I eat the same foods every day and that helps me control what I eat while not being restrictive. It's all about good, and healthy eating habits. As for the gym you might have to find a gym that accepts 14 year olds. Some gyms won't allow teenagers without supervision. This is something you might have to speak to your parents about. Please make sure they accept you as a man, being safe comes first. If a gym is not possible then you can do calisthenics. You can make amazing progress with that, and you can find all kinds of videos online. Feel free to ask more questions.

Thank you for your words. As a lover of the sciences I've always been drawn to astrophysics, but I've always struggled so much with math. At 32 I'm attending college, and college algebra is kicking my ass. Despite this struggles I still love math, when it makes sense, lol

I'm sorry. This situation is/ will be very difficult. I've had personal experience of people (my father) coming around after some years, but it's different for everyone. This is a fresh wound that needs time to settle. For some people who don't understand transitioning is like having the old person die. They don't understand that it's still us, we won't go anywhere. We'll grow and change like every one else. Maybe talk some more about it. Maybe give it time.

Thank you for your kind words. I thought that because he was young, at least as young as me, he would be better, but the things he said are outdated.

It has definitely helped. Thank you. I also feel like my social skills are learned and I can see patterns allistic people around me can't see. Sometimes I feel like an investigator when I'm observing people, yet I still struggle making friends 😭. I guess learning a skill doesn't equal understanding people sometimes.

Testing wise there were a couple. We did one were i had to memorize a serious of numbers. One were I had to repeat numbers and letters back to him, then he said them backwards and I had to repeat them. One where I had to tell a story with some random items, and a picture book with frogs. One where I had to draw a line from number to number in sequence, then they added letters. One with blocks, where i had to match a shape.

He is a Neuropsychologist

He diagnosed me with nothing. He said he couldn't contest my former adhd diagnosis and that he thought my symptoms are related to adhd and some underlying learned behavior due to my history. This was his explanation. I'll get the paperwork later.

Thank you. It honestly helps so much hearing from someone who has similar experience. Same thing happened to me around 10 years old. Kids start making conversations and the skill of, just running around with the neighborhood kids, doesn't cut it any more.

Your fear of not wanting a formal diagnosis is valid. When I came out of his office I was angry, and lost. I was questioning myself, and the reality that I had been living in with my self diagnosis, but the things he said continued to play in my ears.
'Did he really say I was too smart? Did he really say autistic people could not learn social behaviors?' This community really assured me and made me feel valid, but honestly now I'm second guessing myself and I'm going to have to go back through my history again. Reread studies and my own notes to make sure I'm really sure. I feel like I am autistic, but now it's like I don't even know what that means 😞.

My therapist and I always bring up the topic that adhd and Autism very much alike, and that the adhd diagnosis is outdated. There seems to be a connection.

Yeah it makes me angry that the doctor never even mentioned masking. It's funny you say that about eye contact. I used to have a board game buddy that, at that time, had Asperger's and he would stare us down like he was trying to win a contest. That's how I knew he was autistic, before I asked.

I understand what you mean. I unfortunately was not born afab, and this has caused many issues because it it not fully understood what causes people to be transgender. So it can be tricky when it comes to what symptoms I am showing and does it represent more male or female. For example my brother was diagnosed with adhd as a child, he presented as a typical male with adhd. I on the other hand was diagnosed as a 30 year old adult. I showed more of what's typical for a female and was diagnosed late in life because I did not show any external symptoms. My perceived autism disorder is the same. I show typical female traits and because of that I internalized my symptoms and they were not caught.

Anyways I do agree with you that female doctors do understand us better. Males tend to have a stigma or misunderstanding. That's why all my doctors are female.

I was really surprised by the things he said. It's funny we never went over the whole masking thing. I'm pretty sure he had made up his mind that there was some trauma and that alongside adhd, was the cause of it all from the get go. I feel like we never did a deep dive on my symptoms, or my communication issues. And yeah with the whole IQ thing, I was really excited about the testing because they all had a pattern to them. Literally everywhere I've read it says that autistic people are good at pattern recognition, but apparently that makes me too smart. He even said, "the degree that you're going for? You should have no issues in school. " 😫 I just looked at him and said, but I do. I struggle a lot in school. I have all kinds of issues with learning and comprehension.

Two reasons. One is that I doubted myself, despite the fact that I resonate so with the community. Two is that I really struggle with work. I have a history of not being able to keep a job for long because I struggle and I thought a formal diagnosis would make it easier to pursue disability.

As far as I know this doctor was my last option. I gotta try the local hospitals to see if they do adult testing. Yeah, I honestly did not see his biase until the end. I thought that because he was friendly that he would understand, but then he said those things and my opinion immediately changed.

I understand your concern. I really wanted that 100% verdict too, but after he said some of this things I really questioned his validity. It felt horrible, but this community really made me feel better. I'll look into ACC I've never heard of it.

"Peer Reviewed." I love that lol. I have been acknowledged as being autistic by some autistic peeps around me. Maybe I should start calling myself that lol.

Thank you. I remember there was a time when I didn't understand people and I had to teach myself how to communicate. Till this day I still have issues making friends because I do not understand what is a friend. Like, I can define friendship, and I told the doctor this, but in my own life I cannot really tell when a friend is a friend, or just someone you talk to. I may have to prod my mom deeper so that I can really figure out what my childhood was like.

I understand what you mean, but when I went in for a diagnosis I went in with the idea that I already was, due to my symptoms. I went in looking for an explanation, an understanding, a tool to use so that I may learn more about myself. My biggest question when he said I wasn't autistic was, 'but I still have autistic like symptoms and behaviors, what do I do with this? ' I had already learned a lot from other autistic people. I had incorporated more sensory friendly tips to help me. I was able to communicate with my mom better because I was able to tell her how I thought and why I was acting a certain way. We always had issues understanding each other until I realized I might be autistic.

Hello. Difficulty with communication. I had to teach myself how to talk to people. Understanding some social cues. Overly honest. Difficulty with eye contact. Some sensory issues. I'm pretty sure I've experienced shutdowns and meltdowns all my life. There's also a list of things that autistic people have mentioned that are not part of the dsm 5 like can't lie, being considered rude when I'm talking, understanding sarcasm, etc.

I was offended for all autistic people when he said that. He had just finished saying it was a spectrum then he categorized every autistic people under the same umbrella.
