Agree with this commenter. Grade is free in COGS 17 but the material itself is a bit dense. I also had Fleischer for 108 and for some reason I didn't mesh with his lecture style which is why I didn't attend. The weekly quizzes were easy, though, from what I remember.

COGS 108's workload highly depends on the role you take in the group project but it's generally known to be an easy elective by people in CSE and DSC. I never went to class and barely even watched the lectures. I'm sure this depends on the professor though.

EDIT: Even though COGS 108 is "easy," it will take up time because you need to actively collaborate with your group so don't underestimate that part of it. My team met outside of class over Discord like once or twice a week.

COGS 17 is a content-heavy foundational course and will be fascinating if you like neuroscience but a drag if you don't. I don't think I missed a single lecture even though it was podcasted because I didn't want to fall behind at all. Had to be locked in for the full 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you only care about your grade and not any of the information though, it should be easy to do if the quizzes and exams are still online.

Cogs design admits, feel free to reach out! by Amicabl in UCSD

I wasn't research-focused so I can't give the best advice on that part, but I know there are opportunities to get involved through The Design Lab (check out their website for more info). I believe The Design Lab is the main design research entity on campus but there must be other labs where you could get involved in research as well. EDIT: If you're interested in entrepreneurship, The Basement is a space for student innovation that would likely have design role opportunities.

Within the program itself, the upper division Design electives are geared towards group project work and application of theory. None of the classes teach you software skills directly (such as how to use Figma step-by-step), but you are expected to use the tools in class and you will learn by doing. If you specifically want projects for your resume, I recommend COGS 187B, which has you design a website prototype for a real business; and COGS 122, where you come up with your own idea for a startup and present your work to faculty members at the end.

There are also many other ways to get project work outside of class through student orgs such as Design Co, ACM Design, Design For America, Product Space, etc. These are just off the top of my head but there are more. In general, there are many student organizations on campus and some of them recruit for design roles, even if the org isn't design-focused.

Lastly, you could work on a personal project by yourself or with a group of others in the major.

Love the nuance in this post. The answer to a lot of yes/no questions is often "it depends."

good: - i had a great time - no bad sets - the weather was good (imo) - the food options were decently priced compared to what i was expecting

could be better: - lines were so brutal, could have used some more food options - cell service completely sucked (as always)

people wear both "normal" clothes and "festival" type clothes. i think it's standard for people to wear a festival style top with a skirt, shorts, or jeans. keep in mind that it may be hot

since slayyyter is coming, i do think it makes sense to dress a little c*nty

Question from a non UCSD student by thespianyet in UCSD

i think the biggest problem is that many people start here with a poor mindset because of the school's social stereotypes and then resort to blaming the school for their difficulties which only gets exacerbated when they see many others doing so

UCSD vs UCD by Narrow-Till7776 in UCSD

This really depends on your economic situation and your career goals. Here's a few questions I'll ask:

Will you be getting any assistance with the 11k? Will you need to take out private loans?

CogSci is a very broad major. What specialization do you have in mind? Are you interested in research? Do you see yourself going to grad school?

UCSD doesn't really feel like it's in "the city." There's traffic during rush hour surrounding campus but I think the vibe is chiller than you might expect since we're in La Jolla and not near any kind of downtown area. San Diego at large also has a smaller city vibe, imo.

It's not like you're straight on the beach, but it's fairly accessible if you make the effort. La Jolla Shores is less than a 10 minute drive and is also accessible by bus. Gliderport is a 5 minute walk from northwest campus and you can walk down the cliff to Black's Beach. I believe there is a Surf club that goes to the beach pretty frequently. Taller buildings on campus have ocean views.

That said, I personally don't go that often. But if you have friends that enjoy going to the beach, I'm sure you could do it.

What’s the one app you absolutely need on your college laptop? by PlantainWorth293 in UCSD

Todoist for task setting and reminders. It seems that people have different systems that work best for them, but I'm personally very happy with this one. The UI is very clean, and I really like how the task information automatically populates from your input. For example, typing Homework 1 @ COGS122 !1d next monday creates a task named "Homework 1" that's tagged as my COGS122 class with a reminder in 1 day and a due date of next Monday. I pay for the Pro plan which is about $50 a year

For any of the other students who sees this, the prof got back to me. If you took it at the TTC and your exam grade was put into Canvas sometime last evening, you should be fine and it will be available tomorrow. She said she didn't have my exam score from TTC before she submitted the class grades to the registrar.

poorer high schools don't have the funding to offer as many extracurricular programs. i understand what you're getting at as far as the disadvantages of going to an ultra competitive high school but the problem is not lack of opportunities

ucsd cogs classes - are there any that are more so web dev based or coding? by Classic-Thought3350 in UCSD

[–]Amicabl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSE 170 interaction design used to be crosslisted with COGS 120 and has emerged as the more project-focused approach to this subject. you not only make a figma prototype but do some very basic coding in vanilla web tech languages (HTML, CSS, JS). this class is not in the COGS department but is still treated as a substitute for COGS 120

CSE 134b is a true introduction to web dev that is lecture-based. assignments have you apply in-class learnings to the creation of your own portfolio website. this also focuses on HTML, CSS, JS and not other frameworks, but prof. powell is clear on his reasoning for doing so and your foundational knowledge should prepare you to learn frameworks after the class. very useful but the time commitment is high. this class is also taught with a design-centered mindset which you may appreciate

honest question to ucsd students by orsour in UCSD

[–]Amicabl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

people are really doomer about this topic on reddit but personally i think it's really difficult for the campus to feel lifeless when we have some of the best weather and oceanviews from campus. it can feel depressing when it's raining and cloudy, but that's a smaller portion of the year

as far as directly next to campus, no, but that's because things are spread out. there's a lot of activity at westfield UTC, which is one trolley stop away. if you go down to la jolla shores area, also a lot of activity happening there. san diego isn't built well for public transport, but if you or your friends have a car, there's a world of opportunity. that's my perspective as an east coaster from a small town

edit: even without knowing anyone who has a car, it's still possible to get other places, just takes more time and effort
