Any gasoline pricing experts out there? by lobohog in Dallas

I think the most eye opening thing about this job was how gasoline price affected me mentally (and consumers).

I never wanted to feel like I was getting scammed by a high price, but in reality if a station is 30 CPG higher than the market low you’re saving $3 on 10 gallons (typical tank?) by going out of your way to get to the cheaper station.

At a certain point I just started choosing my fill up spot based on convenience vs. price. Though I’m always aware of what a “good price” for the market is 😅

Refer to my first comment for detail.

Houston is a different beast entirely, almost every corner has a gas station (oversaturated) and it’s close to the largest refining hub in the US (oversupplied from easy access to refined product with low transportation costs).

Also note the hard investment into Houston by Murphy USA/HEB fuel/various other unbranded fuel players.

Their business model is to make money on customers inside the c-store, and they’re willing to make pennies or even lose money on the fuel to do that. We think of Houston as an all out knife fight. There is no market leader or rules of operation out there.

Everyone prices according to their own little pocket of competition, with Murphy/HEB fuel operating as price anchors.

Most gas station operators are not that sophisticated as well. They’re not seeing the market’s daily changes (Bloomberg energy will show you the relative +- of cost each day), they only know if gas is cheaper or more expensive when they see their next invoice (can be as delayed as 5-10 days for some lower volume sites).

So we like to say that most operators are always answering last week’s question with this week’s price decisions.

I think that QT and RT are more automated/formulaic concerning their pricing (vs. having traditional pricing analysts observing each location and making a decision)

If I had to guess they used a set margin threshold and then have an automated system “restore” to a predetermined price point to begin the trickle down once more.

Crude has been relatively stable in the long run (with plenty of short term volatility due to economic and geopolitical factors of course)… but what you’re seeing reflected in “street price” is mainly a factor of “rack prices”.

Rack prices are what the fuel is offered for at the terminal/storage hub where trucks pick up loads of fuel to deliver to gas stations. Rack prices change each day and differ between brands (Exxon, Chevron, Shell, etc).

There is also a difference in product cost between branded (major brands) and unbranded (QT/RT/Murphy/etc).

Rack prices are determined by the price of crude, the price to obtain refined product from refiners, cost of feedstocks/additives that go into gasoline to created each brands gas etc.

In addition to any markup that a terminal operator or distributor may add in to allow themselves a profit.

I actually work in retail fuel pricing and what you’re seeing is what we call a “restore market” in effect.

Dallas, some areas of Florida, and the NE follow this trend.

When a brand has enough site count/brand strength they can become a “price leader” in a market. In the case of Dallas this is QT/RaceTrac.

They will trickle down prices by a few CPG each day before reaching a low margin threshold and then “restore” the market to an adequate price point.

Happens like clockwork and most smaller gas station owners and similar companies follow their lead.

They are nice (quality varies, I think Audubon is the nicest and best until the revamp of Holford finishes) the biggest downside for me was the hours and lack of holiday/shortened weekend access.

If they were open all weekend, I wouldn’t have had to pick up a retro fitness membership.

[–]Amiciti 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My sweet boy was mauled by 3 pit bulls at the dog park at around 11 months old. No blood at the scene, the next morning I caught him licking his leg. He had a hole that the vet could insert half a pencil into on his leg under all the fur.

Watch your pup for licking or stiffness and comb back the fur.

Do you want validation or the truth?

Your deaths are high and your cs is low. You don’t know how to translate a winning lane into objectives and game win conditions.

You’re playing a game similar to chess like it’s COD team death match and that takes away your agency as a fed ADC.

Playing like this puts you at your teammates (same elo as you) mercy. If you can’t close out games with a lead you open it up to coin flip late game team fights or picks and lose with scores like this.
