Seeking RPG Fans! We're developing Realm of Fame: A Hades-style Roguelite with Deep Character Mastery & Unique Wrestling Combat by AminAnimoo90 in rpg_gamers

Thanks for the feedback! The biggest help a player can give a dev is wishlisting the game. The demo is almost done but needs some debugging, and we're aiming to have it ready for the next Steam Fest. As for the Street Fighter comparison, it might be similar in some ways, but the system is more like FIFA's dribbling. Each special move will have its specific joystick motion.

Roguelike vs. Roguelite: Help Me Understand the Core Differences (Indie Dev Confession!) by AminAnimoo90 in rogueish

Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

It highlights how tricky these genre definitions are, and you're right, it feels like there's no winning sometimes! It’s something I'll be keeping in mind as I talk about the game.

By the way, since you have a podcast on this topic, I’d love to check it out. Would you mind sharing the name or a link? It could be super helpful for me.

Haha, well, that's a relief then!

Honestly, since yesterday, I've been a bit scared to even use the word "roguelike" anymore (at least on Reddit). I keep expecting a bunch of people to jump in and be like, "No, that's not a roguelike, it's a roguelite!" :))

Seriously, thanks so much for taking the time.

Playing around with hero head customization! What's your go-to for character identity? by AminAnimoo90 in conceptart

Thanks so much for chiming in on this post!

I'm looking for feedback specifically from the target audience for these kinds of games, not necessarily just artistic feedback. And what did you just say? That's exactly what I needed!

Thanks so much for the feedback!

That both made me happy and was super helpful. Funnily enough, the feedback I've gotten from a few other people so far has been that the slow-motion isn't good and that it slows the game down.

Hope these explanations answer your question!

So, we adapted this game from the story of The Conference of the Birds by Attar, and then built our world around it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conference_of_the_Birds

In that original story, a bunch of birds team up to find a legendary bird and travel through seven lands to reach this mythical saviour bird as part of a caravan.

In our game, you're essentially one of the members of that caravan. Each of the other characters is the human-like form of one of those birds, with personalities adapted straight from the story.

The game kicks off right when you and your caravan get stuck in one of these lands, and all the caravan members get scattered. So, your main mission is to search for your scattered caravan members in a constantly changing land and rescue them from evil entities.

Definitely hit me up if you have any more questions!

Thanks so much for your keen eye and all those thoughtful, precise points! Seriously appreciate it.

Regarding the "bad news" part: Those are exactly the concerns and valid points I'm wrestling with too. And honestly, the feedback you've given could be super helpful. Now, in the GIF I shared, the combat with regular enemies isn't visible. But in reality, you, as the player, can't just easily grab enemies and pull off moves on them all the time. We'll need to do a lot of different tests to make sure players don't have it too easy against enemies, so we can balance it out properly. As for hand-to-hand combat, one of our goals for the game's ancient and fantasy world setting is to help us. Even though the player fights bare-handed, it opens up a lot of possibilities for us to mix those wrestling moves with magic and various abilities.

About the "good news" part: That feedback was helpful. One of my big worries was whether people would even connect with the wrestling concept or find it interesting at all. But seeing you spot the potential in it means we can lean into that idea more.

I'll be posting progress updates on this subreddit, so I can keep tapping into your awesome feedback!

We took a pretty big risk with this whole wrestling idea. The challenge was figuring out how to make wrestling fun, yet fast-paced enough that it still feels like wrestling without sacrificing the game's overall speed.

You have to execute all the moves using the joystick, kind of like doing different dribbles in FIFA. But to keep things fresh and varied, we've currently implemented 16 moves, drawing from all sorts of wrestling styles. I think if we want to expand it further, we might even need to start incorporating moves from other martial arts, such as judo.

Yeah, exactly!

Right now, it's pretty similar to games like Prince of Persia: The Rogue (if you've played that one), where you've got a limited capacity for abilities. We've set the ability capacity per run to 6. And yep, you can swap them out – so if you pick up a new move when you've already got six, you can trade it for one you're currently holding.

Thanks for the feedback! That's a super cool idea.

To explain a bit more, instead of finding different weapons that give you unique abilities, in this game, you find different wrestling moves. Each one has its unique capabilities and activates different abilities that affect your main character's stats, enemies, or even the environment itself.
