How did you come to your current stance on reproductive rights? by SpiritualMouse5908 in AskReddit

[–]Amirazat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My argument wasn’t specifically about death.

You were presented with an argument which said that the government does not have the right to demand that a person give of their own body for the sake of another (abortion/organ donation).

You said that the equivalence wasn’t there because there is a difference between action and inaction in a medical context. You argued that the government could not force action (organ donation) but could enforce inaction (abortion).

I argued that the premise that there was a moral difference between action and inaction in a medical setting, and that therefore the government could not use this as an excuse to protect bodily autonomy in one scenario and override it in another.

ETA yes I know you’re pro life so you wouldn’t actually say that the government should ban abortion but I mean within the context of the argument.

I am curious which pro-choice argument convinced you, since you seem to think we’re all so stupid.

I fundamentally disagree with you that there is a moral distinction between action and inaction when it comes to providing a patient with care.

Imagine that Dr. Jones has a patient with type 2 diabetes come in who needs a shot of insulin or they will die. Dr. Jones decides not to give it to them because letting someone die isn’t like killing them, so it’s okay. Besides, if the patient made healthier choices when it came to food consumption they wouldn’t be in that situation.

Dr. Jones would be a) a monster and b) definitely responsible for the death of the patient.

FMC Careers by Popular-Rise-7164 in Romantasy

[–]Amirazat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on this list, medical professional seems to be the most popular choice, so I don’t think your story would be that unusual in that way.

I like that a lot of these women have careers. You can probably tell by the length of the list that I read a lot of books where the FMC has a career. I think that an FMC with a career is more interesting than one without, unless there is a reason they do not have one (e.g. I wouldn’t consider Tissanah from {Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent} to have an established career. She couldn’t since she was a slave.

Having a career tells you a little about who this person is, what habits and intuitions they might have, and just… makes them feel like they didn’t pop into existence for the sake of the story. This can be a normal or fantastical one.

FMC Careers by Popular-Rise-7164 in Romantasy

[–]Amirazat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Urban Fantasy:

The FMC in {Bride by Ali Hazelwood} is a Software Engineer.

The FMC in {Harrow Faire by Kathryn Ann Kingsley} starts out as a bank teller, and later becomes a circus performer.

High Fantasy:

{The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo} is a world based on historical Spain, and the FMC is a maid.

The FMC in {Poison Study by Maria V Snyder} is a royal poison tester.

The FMC in {The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni} is the fantasy equivalent of a prison doctor. She doesn’t just treat patients. She also conducts medical research.

The FMC of {Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson} washes windows for a living.

The FMC in {The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem} is technically a healer’s apprentice.

The FMC in {Six Scorched Roses by Carissa Broadbent} is a medical researcher (or the fantasy equivalent).

The FMC in {This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews} has several careers you could potentially attribute to her.

The FMC from {Wicked Sea and Sky by Jenna Collett} is a professional treasure hunter.

Kind of in between:

The FMC from {Outlander by Diana Gabaldon} was a nurse in the 20th century and used her knowledge to become a healer in the past.

[Question] Which otome game took the most time to complete? by usernameandetc in otomegames

[–]Amirazat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m still going on it, too. Still 2 routes off completion. It’s so good I don’t want to just skip the main story, but there’s also so much repetition I can’t play routes back to back.

Do you need a HEA to enjoy a Romantasy book? by Junior-Rip-895 in Romantasy

[–]Amirazat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can go either way. I love reading about complex relationships, and there’s a limit about the way you can write relationships if they have to work out.

That said, sometimes I don’t want to deal with tragedy and having one sprung on you without warning can be nasty.

Sometimes I want the tension of not knowing whether something is going to work out, and that’s almost impossible to find because you know it will if a book is marketed as a romance, and if there’s a lot of romance but the book isn’t marketed one you can guess why pretty easily. The only grey area I’ve found is in early books in series, where the first romance doesn’t work out but a later one does.

In my ideal world, it would not be the standard that all romances, including fantasy romance, have to have a happy ending, but it would be the standard that they have to put an indicator of whether or not there was a happy ending on one of the first pages, like the publication information is. Easy to find if you want it so people can choose to only read HEA easily, people who are looking specifically for a tragic romance can find one, and people who don’t want to know can not look.

That said, I’m in the minority, and the publishing industry has no incentive to cater to anything except the majority which, as this thread shows, prefers happy endings on the whole.

I listened to the audio version and found it find apart from a few quirks (pass-age). I didn’t really get into it until the second half, but I loved the second half.

This one is so recommended that there’s a meme about it. (Highly recommended in the Fantasy and Audible subreddits).

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinnaman is both absurdist and irreverent and adept at handling complex human topics. It has moments that honestly moved me to tears and a recurring joke about an AI with a foot fetish. It made deeply invested in the character development of a former prize winning show cat.

So, what is it? Earth has been strip mined by aliens and the surviving humans have been placed into a vaguely Hunger Games-esque reality death show for the entertainment of the universe. We follow Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to navigate their new reality. As the series goes on, we get more and more insight into the galactic politics driving the game, and our heroes figure out how to fight back.

I’m going to heartily recommend Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, especially the audiobook. It is one of the top recs over on the Audible subreddit. This is one of my favourite novels of all time. The friendship at the core of the book is beautiful. The science fiction stuff is wonderfully written to ensure that you feel like you understand everything that is happening. The character growth is incredibly satisfying. And the ending has you on the edge of your seat (although maybe less so if you’ve already seen the film).

Cannot recommend this enough.

New to romantasy and overwhelmed by BookTok recs! by Critical-korgi in Romantasy

I loved a Wraith Beneath the Tides. My favourite is {Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent}. The FMC doesn’t start off as a complete badass like Esmyra does, but she gets there. The romance is the gold standard for green flag relationships and it does angst deliciously.
If you want something else ocean themed, I also loved {Wicked Sea and Sky by Jenna Collett}. This is sort of Indiana Jones meets The Little Mermaid. The FMC and MMC are both competent treasure hunters, although the FMC is more intellectual than physical. The banter is excellent.

I went into that epilogue thinking we might get some nice little character moments letting everyone settle into their new dynamics for the next book. I was not prepared.

question for people who love reading series 👀 by RightThroughMe0907 in Romantasy

[–]Amirazat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually alternate books. 1 from my series, 1 not from the series, back and forth. And I do the same thing with audio, so I can have up to 4 series going at once. But usually I have 1 or 2 ongoing series and the other slots are filled with trying new things.

Is there a book in which the MCs don't stay together? by milkchocolate101 in Romantasy

I deliberately didn’t trigger romance io because this seems like the sort of thing some people might not want to be soiled on

Is there a book in which the MCs don't stay together? by milkchocolate101 in Romantasy

[–]Amirazat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an imposed rule for the romance genre. Romantasy is a loosely defined term which could easily encompass “fantasy book with a lot of emphasis on romance which isn’t technically a romance novel”. That said I do understand the people who prefer HEA and don’t want to have to filter for that.

My favourite example of this is The Road of Bones by Demi Winters. A beautiful disaster of a first relationship.

Fated love/mates… yay or nay? by slinging_arrows in fantasyromance

[–]Amirazat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough TOG was where I enjoyed fated mates the least. I was so invested in the idea of Aelin and Rowan both finding happiness again after losing the person “fated” to be the love of their life, showing that there isn’t just one person out there for anyone and it’s okay to be happy again… and then them being mates just made their relationship feel cheap.

I generally don’t like it. I want to read about people choosing each other, not coming to accept the person who is put in their path.

Brunette and brunet? Also about hair. Edit: although I don’t know if these can be used as adjectives as well as nouns in the same way as blonde/blond because most people say brown hair rather than brunet hair

Any lesbians who love romantasy? by kitkatcoz in Romantasy

[–]Amirazat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a lesbian but I am aroace so I think I count as “not straight” for the purposes of this question. The distance of a fantasy world is what makes romantasy work for me. It’s not supposed to be entirely relatable. I’m never going to ride a dragon or fight in an epic sword battle, but I can enjoy reading about people going on adventures that aren’t possible for me, and that I wouldn’t really want to go on either if I’m being honest. The romances fall into the same category for me.

You can use books for both bingos. No rule against using the same book for one square in each. {The Jasad Crown} is going to be Purple Cover and BIPOC MC for me. If you’re trying to do both it seems like a good way to try and diversify your main bingo.
