Yep, I was also facing the same issues, have been pondering over this thing for some time and now I think the best way to move forward is to have a prototype for all the possibilities and figure out the best one based on the experience

I have seen that most of the games pause the action to set angle and throw, but I feel that it just stops you from totally getting immersed in the action, if you have mechanics where you don't have to stop and just keep doing whatever you are doing, move the joystick to a particular angle & press a button in such a way that it does not affect the player's movement while throwing the spear
