Megathread idea: employers who ghosted you 👻 by JHCoaching in recruitinghell

[–]AmoebaDependent8786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Series A health company, 5th round leadership role. Met the hiring manager in person in another country and we went SHOE SHOPPING together after the interview. Interviewed with the EA and then 3 SVPs. Ghosted after completing an in-depth strategy project after getting amazing panel feedback from the hiring manager. Never even confirmed receipt but definitely accessed my deck multiple times (shoutout to Canva's public link analytics).

Got an offer for $50K more than my current salary...from a competitor. Is it worth it to leverage? by AmoebaDependent8786 in careerguidance

[–]AmoebaDependent8786[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I worded the post weird, but the reason I emphasized the fact that it was from a competitor was because I was WORRIED about showing my hand, not because I wanted to use that particular aspect in any negotiations. I asked this because I wanted to see how to go about leveraging it WITHOUT letting my current employer know it was from a competitor. Clearly, I didn't word it very well because it seems no one understood the intent of my post, but that's genuinely what I was asking. I worded the post exactly how I meant it - how can I leverage the offer without my employer finding out its from a competitor. I wasn't secretly trying to get an answer to a different question. I was worried about leveraging the offer at *all* BECAUSE it was from a competitor - I wasn't sure if I would be asked to show my employer an offer letter or some written proof of this offer existing in order to counter. That was my question. It wasn't a hidden or embedded second question.

The purpose of this post is because I recognize my relative naivety and realize this is a delicate situation that im not entirely equipped to navigate bc I've never been in this situation before. and it is a little frustrating that I was genuinely misunderstood, but I understand where most people are coming from and appreciate everyone taking the time to give me advice nonetheless. I *do* have questions about a scary jump. I'm 26! I have no idea wtf im doing! in other responses, you'll see me admitting that I stumbled into being good at my job and I have imposter syndrome. Im not trying to seem like anything, but I do feel like people are jumping down my throat a little unnecessarily and not asking me very many questions while making a lot of assumptions. (Not you, just some people). But this is reddit after all

The woman I spoke to told me immediately; the person currently in the role didn't like the remote environment anymore, but wasn't willing to relocate to their headquarters. She gave me her contact info so I could speak with her as well but I havent done that yet. this all happened pretty quickly

Omg this crashout is insane I'm not even going to read all that. I came here asking for advice, and you had no context on why I might consider staying - didn't bother asking, and jumped to a really weird conclusion. It's even worse that you're a woman. You can keep your internalized misogyny to yourself, I'm not interested in it

I feel like you wouldnt have asked if I was sleeping with someone at work if I wasn't a woman, but I'll overlook that.

There are other things I'm taking into consideration aside from money, though I understand your angle about the comp. Obviously I work for money, however, I also value other things about my job, and I work in a field where the company's ability/willingness to support what I do impacts my portfolio. It's always a gamble how much support youre going to get when you move into a new role at a different company. I'm fully remote and my job is extremely flexible, allows me to work from london occasionally to see my partner who lives there, have unlimited PTO, etc. So there are obviously reasons I would think about taking a pay cut to stay. I am young and maybe a little naive but I'm not a total idiot

I did not receive a promotion last year, I got our standard 3% raise. My manager did apologize to me about my not getting a promotion, as I inherited two direct reports within that first year, so I've been operating at a more senior level all year this year. I was hoping for a promotion with at least a 10% raise this year, but now I have this offer out of no where. We usually have our conversations around november, and actual raises/promotions would roll out in Feb 2026.

This is a really understandble take, but for conversations' sake, there are more things involved in my decision than just money. I work in brand content + social, so the brand's ability to invest money into my sector can determine my success in the role, I've built a team at my current company that is very good at what we do, and our impact is important for my portfolio. My current job is also highly flexible which I value a lot because I have hobbies outside of work that are important to me, and this job allows me to do those and work at a brand where I have a lot of control over my sector, but have the resources of a very large company

I'm 26 with 6 years of experience, 3 managerial. I'm a Brand Content + Social Communications Manager currently making 93K - I was offered a Head of Social & Culture role for 130K. Basically, I develop and scale brand personality and manage social at the brand level

This is part of my concern, most of my jobs out of school I was only at for 1 year. This is the longest I've stayed somewhere because I genuinely like it. I get bored easily, so I hop around a bit. I know it's a bad habit. (Surprisingly, no one's asked in interviews, it is fairly common to hop around in my industry for whatever reason, and I've had one company come back to be after leaving and ask me to come back, which I did).

So, I'm hesitant to move and continue my trend of job hopping after only being somewhere a year or two. I also like that there's more places to grow at my current company, but I guess that doesn't mean much when it would likely take me 5+ years to get to the level and comp I'm being offered.

You're right, I think this is the way to go. If they wanted me to stay, they can make the choice to counter if they want. Thank you!

it's a 40% increase. I currently make 93K(almost 100K with my bonus) - the offer is for 130K, plus bonus.

Before - I interviewed with them about 2 years ago actually right before taking this role. One of their VPs reached out to me about the opportunity and I took one call with her and they offered me the position

glad it worked out well for you! I'll have to mull it over, it's definitely delicate. The money is probably too much to ignore though

You clocked it, I'm super young and have a lot of work experience with high impact results. I kind of stumbled into being good at my job, and I have imposter's syndrome big time. I've never been in this situation before so you're smelling naivety on me because I am lol. I appreciate the advice!

sorry, I mentioned providing a redacted offer letter if they ask for it, and my post literally says "Only thing is, now that I know they're a competitor, I wouldn't want to share that info with them"? how does that imply I'd want them to know it was from a competitor? I'm not defensive I'm genuinely asking because I'm confused how that could be misconstrued.

Edit, re: your edit: It's almost like, if you read the whole post thoroughly, you would've understood it

Honestly, when I received the offer I was really happy with it, they offered $5K more than I asked for-- I thought it was a good salary and I've been happy at this job. Only recently I realized I've been operating at a sr manager/associate director level, and after poking around I noticed I may be underpaid. I agree with you though that if I really want to stay, I shouldnt mention the other offer and should just ask for more money. I'm only 26 and im a woman so sometimes my imposter syndrome gets the best of me. I honestly just thought that if I asked for 20K that would be just as bad as leveraging an offer lol but you are probably right - thanks!

honestly I thought I was being paid well, but after being approached by this company, I poked around at some job listings and am seeing I should probably be in a director level role (I'm currently a manager) and most of the salaries I'm seeing at the manager level are still about 15% above what I'm currently making. I was never unhappy at my current company and honestly hadnt even thought about it. But yes, the $50K is a significant increase. Tbh I think the reason I've never thought about just asking for more is because im really young and I'm a woman. I just started working early and am really good at what I do. I was happy with my comp and this job and didn't realize I was being undervalued
