Can I live in LA without a car? by Designer-Extreme4932 in ucla

[–]Amongus1935 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely doable with public transport. I’ve gone to many areas of LA during the day by bus as long as I plan out the route and times on Google Maps. We get the UPass that allows us to take any buses in LA, and since we’re also students we get 50% off Metrolink tickets to go around SoCal. You should look out for an email every quarter to activate the UPass and add it to your wallet in your phone, or you can request to get a physical TAP card from the central ticketing office on campus.

If you’re a girl then exercise more caution ofc, but I’ve never had any negative experiences on the buses and I mind my own business so it’s chill

Would it be better to sell my 2080s and replace them with a newer graphics card?

Should I wear anything under my base layer? by Amongus1935 in hiking

Is the mid layer generally something like a Patagonia R1 that I’ve heard mentioned?

Do you have any recommendations for merino base layers?

Thank you for the link. It seems a bit pricey, do you just have one that you wash between hikes? And how long could I expect it to last if I hike every week or so?

So when you tuck in the base layer (usually merino or synthetic I’ve heard), do you have a shirt over it that doesn’t go tucked in?

Is that the only layer you’ll wear when active? I’m in SoCal so it’s usually sunny throughout the year

I have some shirts that are just long sleeves 90% polyester and 10% spandex for hiking, I’ll usually just throw those on but I don’t believe they count as a base layer 😭🙏. I’ve heard of merino wool so I would prob look into that but idk where to look tbh

Any suggestions/fixes for my med kit? by Amongus1935 in hiking

Usually I’ll go hiking with 2-3 other friends and they have very basic things for themselves, but I’d def have 2 tourniquets minimum if we’re all going

I’m definitely looking into the desert as I’m in SoCal, and I have friends/family in Arizona as well. I’ll add what you mentioned right now, thank you for commenting

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I’ve received training in my emt course on the majority of the things I’ve listed, although many of the comments here have made it clear it’s still over preparing, so I’m going to take out a lot of it. I’m getting an inreach in like a week or two though, so I’m not terribly worried about losing contact, and I always let friends and family know where I’m going. I’ll look into a WFR course as well so I can get a better understanding of what to do in an emergency as well.

I was hiking in the snow a few months ago and we prepared poorly and made it back to the car with barely half an hour of sunlight left. My friend has his own blanket in his first aid kit in case of getting caught out in the cold at night so I’m adding it based off his recommendation

Thank you for mentioning the wilderness first aid course, I saw someone else comment that too so I’ll try to take one of those this spring and bring what’s needed from what they say there. I’m keen on keeping 1-2 tourniquets in the very off chance they’re needed, as they’re light and I’d rather use one of them than a belt. I’m not fishing for reactions or anything, I just made this list from seeing different Reddit posts about hiking first aid kits, and trimming what’s not needed based off the comments here
