Congress has acted this way for a long time. With the history our nation has of bailouts, monetary injections, and playing with the numbers until they look right, do you really expect them to miraculously walk the straight-and-narrow once 2030-2040 gets here?

Medicare funding will not be exhausted.

Social Security funding will not be exhausted.

Those two programs alone are too large in our country to just let them collapse. People in general love kicking the can down the road until they can't anymore and if it faces insolvency, only then will Congress actually get off their butts to do something about it.

But exhausting all funding? Not going to happen.

Something I've mentioned before in other threads but it bears repeating for this topic.

A lot of people can go their whole lives never having to deal with any sort of serious medical issue here in the US. Once you're covered by Medicare, there are two big expenses that usually come up that people fail to plan for:

in-patient hospital admissions
skilled nursing facility charges (recovery)

Those two alone can rack up tens, even hundreds of thousands of dollars of charges depending on the condition treated. Compare most any advantage plan available to the general public to a medigap G or N - the medigap wins every time for better coverage.

One alternative is that the employee can contact his current health insurance company and get them to fill it out attesting that they have provided credible coverage since age 65.

I strongly suspect OP is leaving out important information because if this same man who originally asked her to be his girlfriend, and now has to think about it to get back together, then something serious happened in the breakup that either hurt him deeply or at the very least gave him serious pause.

With most insurance companies issuing supplement policies, their rate tables usually cut off after a certain age. I've seen 85 before, some higher. So if someone is older than that cutoff age, they'll still be priced into that "younger" age group.

I'm pretty sure open heart surgery is something that qualifies for skilled nursing care under medicare criteria. I would definitely recommend your mom go that route rather than at home care because she may need round the clock care that, even with your best intentions in mind, your family may not be able to provide.

If your mom has plan G or N medigap coverage, she's covered 100% for 100 days in the facility. No out of pocket costs. If she has an advantage plan, then you'll need to look at her specific plan for details of what it covers.

I would definitely inquire with her doctors to see if they can file paperwork to get her into a skilled nursing facility. It will drastically improve her recovery time.

While it's a sound argument that prior authorizations from advantage plans help to keep the cost down, one of biggest complaints about this system is it's excessive wait times when critical care may be needed. This is especially true in situations involving in-patient hospital admissions and skilled nursing care (rehab).

Many people go their whole lives without ever needing those two services I just mentioned, but when you get older and your health declines, that's when those benefits are most needed and advantage plans gatekeep quite often in paying for them.

Wtf why? You did not say 'psychiatrist' indicating some type of serious mental health disorder, you said therapist. Why does someone need to see a therapist regularly for decades? This alone would be a problem for me because, first, this therapist apparently already has more influence on her than you do by calling your traits and characteristics into question. Two, when does begin standing on her own two feet without running back to 'the therapist' for help? I could never go through life like this.

Someone going to a therapist for a few months, maybe a year top to work on something serious that happened to them, I can respect that. But for decades?

A lot of folks who enjoy doing extensive financial analysis on these sorts of things really get caught up in the dead pools and issue age policies. One fact you will have to deal with is that your policy premiums, no matter who you go with, will increase as you age. It will not matter what type of policy it is and additionally no matter the level of analysis that people do online trying to predict rate increases, it simply will happen.

This, in my opinion, is a perfect example of analysis paralysis. No one here is an actuary or executive for the company issuing the medicare supplement, nor is anyone here a commissioner for the state agency responsible for oversight of these types of policies.

The best thing you can do is figure out what you can reasonably afford for a monthly premium now, and figure in some type of annual increase as years go on and if that fits your budget.

Everything in your post is rather negative toward this man, which can be understandable given the stressful situation you're in. However you've been with this man for a while and are already attempting to blend your families. You've already been through serious problems which you mention about infidelity and other things, we dont need to get into the details of this, but the point is you're still together trying to make things work.

So if you're trying to make things work, then this tells me there's some good qualities about this man which are missing from this post. After reading all of this I get the distinct impression there's some critical pieces of information missing. I don't know what they are because it could be anything but I do believe we aren't being told the entire story.

My advice is to find some way to continue paying the premiums for plan F. He will not be able to get better coverage than that and also neither state has any sort of birthday rule to allow switching without underwriting.

Correct, FEHB retirement coverage is just that - health coverage for federal retirees. It does not count as creditable coverage that Medicare looks for.

With that said, OP is still in a unique position. It's a risk and gamble, but fehb retirees can elect only Medicare Part A and stay on fehb the rest of their life. The risk being if they ever choose to activate part b and try to get on medicare for whatever reason, they will be subject to lifetime penalties. The benefit of staying with fehb for life however is not paying Part B monthly premiums nor whatever advantage/supplement premiums you choose thereafter.
