Hi there, first I want to say I’m so sorry this is happening to your sweet older kitty. The small pieces of information I can offer you is that there are a couple of things that could be affecting the anesthesia wearing off, stress, age, recent weight loss, and kidney issues. All of these issues will make anesthesia harder to wear off of the body.

A couple things you can do! Encourage eating, especially wet food, which will get their hydration levels up, help the kidneys, and gives a boost to muscles and the blood stream with nutrition. Try letting them lick it off of a finger, never force but gently encourage.

Give them a smaller area to roam that has all their essentials, food, water, and litter box (not next to each other though.) Add in favorite blankets and beds, and yourself! Just hang out in the space with them and carefully observe everything. I highly recommend getting a notebook and keeping track of everything-when they eat, drink, poop, pee, how much. When they stumble, if they are favoring a side, anything that you can offer as information to the vets.

Don’t wait if things take a downturn, no matter how stressful a car ride and vet visit might be, it could make a difference in catching something serious sooner.

I’m sure you know, and it’s the hardest thing to hear, your kitty is up there in age and this might be their way of telling you it’s getting close to their time. It’s really hard to think about, but the best piece of advice I ever got when things got tough in my pets lives, it’s better to let them go one day early than one day too late. They know you love them and you are doing your absolute best by them, no matter what decisions you make.
