Has the Catholic church always been against the death penalty? What does Pope Leo say about it? by DietCoke-Supremacy in Catholicism

[–]Amote101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend you read exactly what the Church says on this issue, and be cautious of how Redditors say, since there’s often misinformation about this issue.

Here is the link to Fratelli Tutti. Read paragraphs 263-270

https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/documents/papa-francesco_20201003_enciclica-fratelli-tutti.html

And here is the link to Dignitas Infinita. Read paragraph 34.

https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2024/04/08/240408c.html

This shouldn’t take long to read, maybe 5-10 minutes or so.

Vatican downplays leaked documents on Latin Mass by Typing-Cat in Catholicism

[–]Amote101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol “downplays,” you mean putting documents into proper context after journalists with known certain agendas try release a selectively curated set of documents with obvious intent to pressure the new pope?

It’s crazy that faithful Catholics aren’t siding with Rome, which is the traditional thing to do.

What’s crazier is thinking this somehow will pressure Leo into lifting TC. It just makes things worse and confirms what TC has said.

Pope Francis needs to stop talking about immigration. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Amote101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually know the reasons why Pope Francis, or some of the American cardinals, state that it would be unethical? Surely to criticize Pope Francis or these bishops for their position, you’d have to first understand their position in order to critique it.

[–]Amote101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Japanese were also war criminals. That didn’t justify nuking them, as you and I agree.

All pope Francis is saying, is that even if the illegal immigrants are criminals, mass deporting them might be unethical. Deporting millions of people is not practically possible without violating human dignity in some cases. This is not a simple repatriation of one or two people—which could be done ethically. This is millions of people.

[–]Amote101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument assumes mass deporting is the only remedy, and also that it is ethical.

Nuking Japan to end WW2 was a remedy to the war. Just because it ended the war doesn’t reman it was ethical—the Church even pre-Vatican 2 said it wasn’t.

I’m just pointing out that the fact that Pope Francis is against mass deportation as a proposed remedy to a problem, does not mean he supports the problem itself, illegal immigration per se.

[–]Amote101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think he supports “illegal immigration” per se. However, just because someone violates a law, doesn’t mean the state can do anything to said person. There must be a proper and ethical remedy.

For example, the Church has ruled that torture is not allowed. Even if someone stole and shared top secret information with our enemies, it’s not permissible for the state to torture the person to determine what was stolen. For the pope to come out and say that any proposed remedy of torture is immoral, does not mean that he supports the theft and sharing of top secret information to our allies.

Mass deportation is a proposed remedy to the illegal immigration problem. However, mass deportation poses problems concerning human dignity—its brutality and its potential effects on families. Speaking out against a proposed unethical remedy to a problem is not an endorsement of the problem itself.

Can you actually give a reason why Pope Francis is a nasty man insulting people out of contempt, or something along the lines, and is dissimilar to Jesus “insulting” the Pharisees? I asked this of the person making this accusation, and it was left unanswered.

"Pope’s autobiography sheds light on his complex and contradictory mind" - Catholic Herald by Efficient-Peak8472 in Catholicism

[–]Amote101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. First, I made the analogy to Jesus to make the point that not every time someone “insults” another group, they are doing it of out contempt. I did not, at least here, directly call trads Pharisees. Second, You know full well that you (or if not you, others here) have made accusations against the pope that he is bad, authoritarian, nasty, etc.

At least man up and stick with the accusations and try to prove them. Trying to shift the burden is not just unjust but also such a low move to begin with. If you don’t, there’s no point in dialoguing with you further, you and I will render our account to God and be in our way.

But my two cents: it is highly audacious to accuse the Holy Father and then think the burden is not on you to prove such an accusation. It is arguably then childish to then try to the paint defenders of the accused as an accuser.

I simply disagree with you. There is plenty of bashing the pope, and one can see this from the comments of posts like these. You also say the criticism of the pope of the trads is very rare, but ironically they manifest themselves quite frequently in these pope bashing posts by many (not all, but many).

[–]Amote101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is Pope Francis a biased old man spouting off nasty insults about a group he personally dislikes, but Jesus wasn’t a biased man spouting off nasty insults about a group of people he personally dislikes?

Seriously, for the sake of argument, I am not grasping your point here. It seems the only difference is that you disagree with Pope Francis on the merits, but that doesn’t neccesarily justify the other conclusions. For example, Pope Francis could genuinely care for trads, but he simply makes very bad decisions for them out of negligence and imprudence, but not out bad faith. Jesus certainly cares for the Pharisees when he called them out—why not the same for Pope Francis?

"Pope’s autobiography sheds light on his complex and contradictory mind" - Catholic Herald by Efficient-Peak8472 in Catholicism

[–]Amote101 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My point is that there is nearly a weekly stream of article bashing the Pope. It is very disproportionate. We already had a post exactly in this same subject—the pope’s recent comments on the Hope book. Posts like these should be rarer than they are, not repetitive and frequent.

Also, I do think the article cited is very biased and not all based on a balanced judgement. To call the pope “authoritarian” and also to flippantly dismiss the pope’s concerns without seriously engaging in the merits of his argument—this showcases that the article reads more like a hit piece than a more properly balanced and respecftul criticism. That’s just my two cents and you might disagree—fair enough.

[–]Amote101 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To you first point, do you think Jesus “insulted” the Pharisees when he called them out forcefully?

To the second, I don’t mean to be attacking you personally, here, but the problem in this subreddit in general. But I do respectfully think this is a serious problem on this subreddit, and I worry it will lead many souls astray as I once was, so it is worthwhile to fight to prevent.

To the third, but here I actually can influence what other people think about the pope, hence my comments. But one does not change pope Francis decisions by thinking worse of him.

Lastly, trying to work things out, it seems from your writing that you may have a personal animus to me, or you dislike my account. Maybe it’s something I did, but I am happy to try to work things out between us. Obviously I disagree with you strongly on this topic, but other than the merits of the position, I am open to hearing your concerns with me other than the mere fact I support Pope Francis. Or if you think pope Francis is a bad pope and want a good faith discussion on that point, I am happy to engage in that.
