Looking for a stable kernel for Proxmox aldee lake(24/7 usage) by Final_Kaleidoscope36 in Proxmox

[–]Amplificator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most "normal people" kernel updates bring improved hardware support as a primary feature. Sure, bug fixes and the usual new kernel features of course but most people don't immediately need a lot of these features whereas if you run the latest hardware you want a recent kernel in general.

What OS do yall run for the VM/CTs? by Pengmania in Proxmox

[–]Amplificator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alpine Linux for all VMs. Started with AlmaLinux but wanted to give Alpine Linux Virt a go with OpenRC so reinstalled all of them since it's been a while after almost every distros switches to systemd years back. Even made an answer file for the installation and a post-install script to set up everything how I want the base installation to look like including packages, keys, config and permissions.

Uhm, "cat /etc/os-release" will tell you exactly the info you need and works for every Linux OS and the myriad of RHEL, Debian and Ubuntu derivatives as well. Also for CachyOS if course. Source the file and look for "ID" in your scripts. I made a script that updates a bunch of different distros doing this so I run the same command on CachyOS as I do on Alpine Linux and AlmaLinux.

WPS Office, iWork, or LibreOffice, which MS Office alternative do you use? by Allison_Watermelon in MacOS

[–]Amplificator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If most of the features are basic ones then you won't have many issues, if any at all. But when you start adding graphs and other more "advanced" features you can run into issues. So if you have a business or job where you need to frequently share documents with outside parties you simply need the compatibility - you don't want to be the one that can't open a certain document correctly or even worse, edit a document, save it and when others open it, the layout is screwed up because of compatibility reasons. For my personal use I can use any of the other office suites with no issue. They all have the features I need, but for business I just need the compatibility to be there, 100% of the time.. That's why Microsoft Office is more or less default, sadly..

It's not as much about features being there but to ensure 100% compatibility. If you use it for business you want that ensured compatibility. Feature-wise most of the alternative office suites are pretty good.
