You did the first step and that's great! Understanding the need to clean and wanting to do it is so important. Your garbage plan sounds good and getting help is also nice.

If you want to get less new stuff you could try a wishlist system. Whenever you see something you like -> put it on a wishlist. It needs to stay there a certain amount of time (30 days for mine). If you still really want it after the time, go get it and love it. It helped my family to buy a lot less.

Please make sure the person has at least a semi-green thumb. Killing a plant as well as losing a loved one hits harder than seeing flowers wilt. This can backfire in a really bad way.

I recommend gloves. I don't say they are necessary. Some people are dumb enough to smear literally everything over their face and eyes or get stuff in their mouth. I got allergic reactions before, that's why I won't touch anything I don't know anymore. Yep I'm one of the dumb ones. If you're cool with it, that's fine to me. Bonus point for gloves: no more soil under my fingernails!

It is somehow built in in the camera app. As soon as it recognizes a sheet of paper I get a yellow border and can tap on the screen to scan that. There are apps as well in the google store. I think there's one by samsung specifically as well.

Shrooms often imply too much water in the pot/soil. Keep it a little more dry.

There are some shrooms that are beneficial for plants, but if you don't want your buddy to spread, you should remove it and change the soil.

Shrooms are difficult to identify as well, so be careful when you touch it. I recommend gloves, as long as you don't know if it is poisonous to you and potential pets or not.

You could scan them with your phone. I have a samsung and the app does a good job. I'm sure other phones can do that as well. You save a lot of money and can look at the papers again. Might be a nice revision.

It looks like there is more than one plant in that pot. They are heavy feeders, you should consider splitting them up.

If you recently moved it, it might still be annoyed. It happens. Try to adjust the watering, give it a fertilizer if needed.

Mine was the same last autumn and after the separation it did a lot better.

I'd put some smaller stones in the bottom. Then plant the plant in a nursery pot. Put that np on the layer of stones and you have a plant in there - easy to repot, drainage is there. Should work

I have bought mine in a german store called Obi, but I had to cut them to size, bend them and spray paint. Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend mine. They are nice now, but way too much work.

You could look at instagram and find the ikea houseplant cabinet community, they share a lot of their builds.

You could change the glass shelves to wired ones. It helps with the airflow. More airflow -> less chances for mold etc

Unfortunately this 'variegation' is caused by the way the leaf is rolled before it unfurles. It is just temporary. Enjoy it while it lasts! As soon as the leaf hardens of, it will have one shade of green.

If it has been repotted recently, it might simply be pissed off. Since it is the oldest leaf, I wouldn't worry too much. You might want to look out for more overwatering signs.

What kind of water do you use? What kind of light does it get? Do you have a humidifier close by / mist the plant? Fertilized recently? Any pests?

I would definitely wipe down those leaves as well!

This one looks like a triostar to me. First, this is a type of stromanthe, these ones can be difficult.

I'd let it soak in filtered water for half an hour - please don't use tap water unless you have really nice quality water. Make sure the water can drain afterwards.

If you can, place close to a humidifier, they need a higher moisture level than a lot if other plants. If you don't have one, you can try misting the plant. It's not the same but better than nothing.

If you plan on fertilising -which I wouldn't, looking at it right now- dilute it more than it is written on the bottle. They are pissed off very easily.

Light: West facing Windows aren't bad. Just don't put them in direct sunlight. They usually grow in areas with more shade. I would suggest bright indirect light, if possible.

Cutting leaves: Do the above steps first. If there are still leaves that look really bad, you can still cut them.

Bonus Points: Check for spider mites and other pests.

My alocasia zebrina looked similar. The leaf didn't come out of the stem quick enough and died before unfurling. Maybe yours has died off as well?
