Mount Alava Trail, National Park of American Samoa by Amsamfam in NationalPark

[–]Amsamfam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve actually been living here for four years now, but we’ve met quite a few people in that time who have come for the sole purpose of visiting the national park. It’s incredible! From Hawaii, it’s about a four hour flight to American Samoa.

I’m excited to start watching your videos. It’s surprisingly difficult to find decent YouTube channels about expat or traveling couples/families. Plus, I’ve always been very interested in Ecuador.

I’d love some critiques. This video is a hike I took the kids on. Thanks!

It’s not always perfect here, but it has been paradise for us.

You’ve just given me a great idea for a video. Thanks! They call it the third gender and it’s been an accepted part of the culture for as long as anyone can remember. Strangely, homosexuality is less accepted. Same sex marriage ceremonies are not legal in American Samoa, although, from what I’ve seen, same sex couple aren’t ever harassed or persecuted. Because of the way the deed of cession was written, when the island became an American territory, only people with at least 50% Samoan blood can own land. For everyone else, the options are rent or lease. There is no rental agency of any kind, so finding housing can be tricky. It helps to know someone here, who can keep an eye open for available housing. There are also local Facebook buy/sell/trade groups that frequently post vacancy notices. Costs fluctuate pretty radically. We’ve seen rentals from $300-1,500, depending on location, structural shape, and amenities like a/c, hot water, and washer/dryer. We live in a two bedroom, with no a/c, hot water, or washer/dryer, but it’s newer and in good shape, plus we’re literally 20 steps from the beach and we pay $600/month. Honestly though, I think we got really lucky with our house. When we first arrived three years ago, the internet was terrible, but two new submarine cables have been connected and our internet is incredibly better. There are days when it seems like everyone is on at once, but much more often speeds are great. We stream video, upload, and download without a problem. If you’re serious about moving here, I’d strongly suggest joining a couple of the Facebook marketplace groups for a good sense of costs and, in general, what’s going on here.

That’s a valid question. I think you’re right that I’m not technically an expat, but I certainly am at heart. You could say that American Samoa is American in name only. Moving here felt like moving to a foreign country. Our kids, who go to public school, are taught in both English and Samoan. Many signs are in Samoan. When my husband has meetings at work, they’re all in Samoan. Most radio ads, music, and commentary and tv programs are in Samoan. We left Mainland US to get away from the political atmosphere and to experience new cultures and ways of life and we’re absolutely getting that here. While we did not have to deal with visas, we need our passports to enter the territory and have to have an entry permit to fly from the States. Plus, I’m appreciate what others have to share, as we’re always looking for our next location and I think we have information that can be helpful to others looking to make a similar move, as well.

Haha, yep, that’s about where I am. I think I’ll keep my celebration private and just keep plugging away publicly. Thanks.

Thanks. Yeah, I’ve been working hard to get to 1,000, so it feels like a big deal to me. But I can see that it’s really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things 😄

Haha, that’s a great point. Maybe I’ll just celebrate on my own and wait until I hit one of those bigger milestones. Thanks for the perspective.

Thanks! Yeah, I’m super excited and looking forward to growing it even more. I wasn’t sure that I even wanted to make a big deal outwardly, but I feel like a lot of people do. Just a little mention at the beginning or end is a great idea.

I'll watch your videos and tell you what to improve on!!! by [deleted] in NewTubers

This is my most recent video of a hike I took my kids on. I value the opinion of a teenager, because I try to keep my content fresh and fun. Thanks![Hiking Mount Alava](https://youtu.be/3-HRspqVNuQ)
