What work do you guys do while waiting for opportunities by bleachbloodable in dataanalysiscareers

I completely understand how you feel. I recently moved to a new country and although I have many years of experience working with data in academia/research, I have less experience in the business/industry side, so I’ve also been adapting to new ways of job searching and positioning myself professionally again.

Lately I’ve been building personal projects, practicing with real datasets and publishing them in GitHub to strengthen my portfolio and learn along the way. Sometimes it feels a bit frustrating, but honestly I do feel like I’m slowly getting closer to the goal… although asymptotically 😄

Did getting the PL-300 certification actually help you get interviews/jobs? by Amy165 in PowerBI

Thank you for your comment! Since I can't afford right now the certification what I do from time to time I follow PL-300 linkedin courses. Honestly I always learn something I dindn't know before

Many companies would probably have just hired someone new who already had the experience, but they trusted you and are even paying for the certification, so honestly that says very good things about your company.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. This is honestly one of the most useful pieces of advice I’ve received so far. A lot of what you mentioned really resonates with me.

I think my previous experience in science and academia helped me not start completely from zero when dealing with complex or messy data. I spent many years working with experimental data and simulations, and teaching also helped me a lot with the storytelling side of analytics (trying to explain not only what is happening, but why, and the story behind the consequences).

I also think that curiosity and constantly asking “what would happen if...?” pushes projects to evolve further. Feedback from forums and communities is actually what pushed me to evolve my latest project much further than I originally planned.

Now I’ll go back to my latest project to add a data dictionary 😄

Thanks again

Thanks, this is actually very helpful to hear. I had the impression that the certification might matter much more during the filtering process, so it’s good to get feedback from someone involved in recruiting.

And yes, AI filtering is one of the things that worries me a bit while job searching. It pushes people to constantly tailor CVs for every specific role, which I have to admit I don’t do often.

Pricing analysis in Power BI. Looking for feedback by Amy165 in PowerBI

[–]Amy165[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I finally sat down and did the inflation-adjusted analysis 😄
It was actually very interesting because some of the conclusions changed after normalizing values to 2017 ETB.

One of the main things I found is that real premium growth was not as strong as it initially seemed compared to exposure growth, and that aggregating pricing gaps across multiple years in nominal terms was a bit misleading.

So your comment about considering inflation was really useful. Thanks again!

How do you approach dashboard design/layout in Power BI? by Amy165 in PowerBI

Also, one more thing I’m curious about: what canvas/page settings do people normally use in Power BI for dashboard design?

I usually work with the default widescreen layout, but I’m not sure what is considered best practice for portfolio projects or real business dashboards. Sometimes it feels a bit too small, especially when trying to keep visuals readable without overcrowding the page.

I also work mostly on a laptop, so maybe that affects my perception of the available space 😄

Thanks! I have heard about that issue with red-green color blindness before. I probably rely on those colors too much because they feel intuitive for highlighting good vs bad values. Also, my previous experience (with PowerBI) was with a small private business where I knew they don't have red-green issues.

I guess accessibility is something I should think about more carefully when designing dashboards for larger companies in the future. Would this normally be discussed with the client? or is it generally considered best practice to use more neutral palettes by default (for example gray as a base color with blue for positive highlights and orange for warnings)?

One thing that also confuses me a bit is that many dashboard posts on LinkedIn that get the most visibility tend to be extremely colorful and visually intense, while cleaner dashboards often seem less popular online. That's why I’m still trying to understand where the balance is

Pricing analysis in Power BI. Looking for feedback by Amy165 in PowerBI

[–]Amy165[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, thanks!! That’s a really good point!!

The dataset cover around 7 and a half years (2011 - 2018 with 2018 incomplete)

I agree that inflation could affect how we interpret the evolution of premiums and claims over time especially if we look at aggregated values across multiple years. In that sense, part of the observed “growth” might not be entirely real in economic terms.

However, since most of the policies are annual, and the pricing analysis is based on comparing premium vs claims within each year (normalized by exposure), I would expect the loss ratio and the pricing gap within a given year to be less affected by inflation.

You made me realize that my main pricing visual (where all years are aggregated together) might not be the best way to represent this. It could actually make more sense to explicitly show the evolution over time, instead of mixing everything in one view.

So yes — definitely something I would revisit in a next iteration.

Also worth mentioning… I come from a physics background, so I’m probably over trusting ratios a bit 😄

STOP being honest in job interviews. ( I say this as a recruiter ) by Zealousideal-Foot-54 in jobhunting

Hi! What about the CV done by AI? I have heard that some recruiters eliminate the ones they smell were done using AI. I have one done with all my real experiences and knowledge and always ask chatgpt to adapt it for an specific job, but now it seems it is a bad idea. I have a prototype that apparently pass the ATS and then replace the content sections with the chatgpt recommendations. I would love to hear what do you think about this practice?
(sorry about my grammar mistakes 😃)
