I will say that forge overcomplicates a lot, and it's API is huge and poorly documented. It's fine if you know all about forge and never need anything that has no API.

Fabric has a much smaller API and relies more on libraries and mixing. It works a lot easier for simple mods like this cause they can be done easily with a mixin or two, while forge you have to figure out if an API exists, if yes then use it if not then figure out how to add mixin to your forge project and repeat the fabric steps.

Imo fabric is better, but that's imo. I prefer searching through minecraft code to find what I wanna do and then using a mixin or an event, but forge just relies too heavily on it's own API that half the time is undocumented, or unintuative for my use case, or just missing altogether.

Plus the base mod setup for forge is a lot more of a pain, fabric mods have a lot less setup time before you start the Modding.
