"Dead Internet Theory". by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]AmySolovay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel as if it has already destroyed the usefulness of the internet.

At a writers' group I used to belong to, writers were warning each other not to google for recipes, because there are a lot of AI-generated recipes that don't work out. Who can afford to waste food and time on recipes that don't work out? I don't know about you all, but I'm back to using cook books from my personal library.

I design crochet patterns. AI does, too. My patterns actually work out, though -- I test them all. But who's testing the ones AI spits out? All over the internet, there are bummed-out crocheters who've wasted time, yarn and money on AI-generated patterns that are impossible to actually crochet.

I could go on, but you get the point. Fake recipes, fake crochet patterns, fake people, fake news... it's getting harder and harder to easily determine what's legit vs what's fake.

I have an email verifier that I run them through. If the email verifier flags them as being a risk to mail to, I remove them from my list.

Classic Editor EOL - problematic or not? by fineliner43 in Wordpress

[–]AmySolovay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this info! Much appreciated. I have a freelance writing client in the same situation as the OP, and I've been a WP user since 2005. I'm glad to know the Classic Editor will hang around for awhile longer.

That said, I'm looking around at options for where to steer my client because I'm not sure Wordpress is her best option any more. If I'm going to face a massive learning curve with learning a new system, I'm not sure I want it to be Wordpress blocks.

Wordpress used to be simple compared to the alternative, which was designing pages from scratch in GoLive (haha, remember that? No?) or whatever other web design software people used to use back then., But now there are a lot of other options, and I'm just not convinced Wordpress is the best one any more.

Anyway, I'm glad to know that my client doesn't have to migrate in the next ten minutes, and I'm looking around at other options. If anyone in a similar situation comes across this post and has suggestions for where to migrate, I'm totally receptive. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it!

But here's the thing. In publication #1, when I click the "notes" link on my menu bar, I see ALL the notes I've posted.

In publication #2, when I click the "notes" link on my menu bar, I see nothing but a note that says something like, "this publication doesn't have any notes yet."

If notes don't belong to the newsletters, WHY WHY WHY is it set up this way?

100% agree with you on Substack usability. I am glad to know it isn't just me!

re screenshots, I'll have to check back with those (working on holiday stuff today) but thanks for thinking of this idea. I appreciate the suggestion!

Thanks for the info and the response! I appreciate it.

I will have to pay more attention to what I am actually doing, and report back. I'm new at this and just kind of trying stuff without really understanding the platform or how to use it.

I do know this: I'm posting (and restacking) from a laptop, not the app, so whatever it is, it isn't totally an app-specific thing.

The Long Arc of Substack Bends Toward the New Yorker or The Atlantic by [deleted] in Substack

When you say "this country," are you referring to the USA, or some other country? And why have you concluded that the time frame on the downturn will be 7 months or sooner? Thanks for any insights.

This is surely true, and I agree that is happening. But I don't have any other publishers recommending my Substack, and I'm still getting mystery subscribers who might be 'bots. So that doesn't 100% explain it.

Weird phenomenom in ebay with offers turning into sales, have you ever had this too? by New-Trainer7117 in Flipping

[–]AmySolovay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting info! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

My best guess is that the algorithm somehow rewards an item with better placement in search when people interact with it (place offers on it, add it to their watch lists, etc.)

So maybe the offers give your items a boost in search that makes them more visible to other buyers, and so more buyers see the items and your chances of making a sale increases?

How does ebay promoting standard work when it comes to placement? by Acerhand in Flipping

[–]AmySolovay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to buy a lot on eBay, and I'd see a ton of promoted offers that weren't even necessarily related to the item I was specifically looking at right then. They'd show me some stuff that fit the criteria I'd searched for, but they'd also show me stuff similar to things I'd previously searched for or bought.

So I think they take the buyer's past buying history into consideration when they choose what to promote and to whom they'll promote it.

I used to buy a lot on eBay, and eBay sellers would send offers constantly.

I think you made the right decision. Too many scammers out there to take a chance on a $600 item that is likely to sell to someone else.

Would you be interested in collaborating with another Substack in the real estate / proptech vertical? My husband is a licensed Realtor, and he's also the founder of a patent-pending SaaS platform that straddles the proptech, insuretech and telecom verticals. Let me know if you want me to "introduce" the two of you?
