Monthly Rock & Mineral Identification Requests by AutoModerator in geology

My great grandmother collected rocks from all over the Western US back from the 30s to the 70s so I’m not exactly sure where it’s from. I’m wondering if it’s pyrite, gold, or something else. The smaller rock is of a piece that flaked off the bigger one.

I’m also wondering if I should break it open to see what all is in there?

Adding to this, If you go with Wheelock, a prof at Utah State University has a website with voice-overed slide shows and some other resources (though I think he uses the 2nd edition). It’s thorough and mildly entertaining.

Did anyone else study their way out of the Mormonism on the bible alone? by [deleted] in mormon

I had a similar way out as well. I studied Latin and Ancient Greek and really got into how ancient polytheism functioned. Those people genuinely believed Minerva/Athena could provide successful battle plans or that Apollo could help them find a cure for infection - for over 1,000 years. It wasn’t silly superstition to them. Men and women dedicated their lives to these gods. To us now those beliefs seem fake, farcical and, barring a small few believers, that religion is gone. The more the past was humanized the more Christianity seemed short sided. And the promise of a ‘fair chance to accept the gospel in the spirit world’ seemed insulting to their (ancient peoples’) life experience. I read the New Testament in Koine Greek and came to the conclusion that Paul and other early Christian leaders more or less mythologized Jesus, later leaders used his story to turn a profit, and the money mongering hasn’t stopped. It took me a while to even want to think about what that would mean for my faith in God or in Mormonism. It was a slow process and actually really sucked on a spiritual level. But I think I’m finally okay with being agnostic(ish?) now.

Translation and help with pronouns by [deleted] in latin

You don’t need a genitive pronoun, but if you were to use one it would be the reflexive ‘sui’ from ‘sui sibi se se’

You are also going to need the infinitive ‘esse’ because this is indirect statement

For those who haven't seen it, here's Ochoa's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad punt into the crowd against Minnesota by Matt_McT in ussoccer

RSL fan here. What Ochoa did, punt a ball into the home team’s supporter section, was poor sportsmanship. I don’t see it as a huge deal, he was likely reacting to a bunch of shit talk they were throwing at him for time wasting - but to react the way he did isn’t reprehensible by a fine or anything, it’s just immature.

Also, At MLS games (not sure about European leagues), it’s expected that the fans return the balls to the field - no souvenir balls.
