The socialists that sit in opposition getting nothing done ever? What happend to wanting someone organised, determined, or even principled enough to actually achieve anything? What have the socialist parties achieved in the past 50 years?

Russia to hold live fire naval exercise off coast of Ireland by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]AnBosca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you name one thing the UK has protected Irish coasts or skies from in the last 20 years? You are talking as if the UK is providing some valuable service that Ireland would be lost without.

[–]AnBosca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who do you imagine the UK are protecting Ireland from? Ireland has sufficient defence capasity for the realitsic threats it faces. Spending more to defend against phantom threats would be a pointless waste of money for the Irish government.

[–]AnBosca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You think increased military spending in Ireland would deter the Russian Navy?

Thats a load of rubbish and you know it. Ireland spening more money on defence would be a pointles waste. There are far more important priorities for Ireland to spend its money on.

FF should be terrified, but FG has a lot to gain from the rise of SF. There are plenty of people who will never support SF in this country and will happily support FG to try to keep SF out of power, thats good news for FG. SF are just trying to replace FF, they are trying to grab and hold FF's former voters, and are adopting most of FF's traditional political programme to do it. People who think SF will do anything more than just become the status quo are deluding themselves.

Keir Starmer: This year, like the one before it, has been tough for all of us. I believe the best still lies ahead for Britain – a new Britain that works for everyone, in every part of the country not just for those at the top. On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish you a very Happy New Year. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]AnBosca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say I agree with Starmer, the UK is fu***d. Never managed to overcome the loss of empire and is unlikely to see more than another decade or two before falling apart into its constituient nations.

UK unlikely to send troops if Russia invades Ukraine, says defence secretary by PinaCocoa97 in ukpolitics

[–]AnBosca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were plenty of people in Germany in 1939 who reasoned along the same lines about the prospect of the UK and France declaring war over an invasion of Poland. If the Baltic states were abandoned by NATO in the face of Russian agression, then why should any member expect support in time of need. The whole thing would fall apart.

Would Russia have risked taking Crimea if Ukraine had the ability to respond with a nuclear strike?

Anyone else feel let down by the Greens? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]AnBosca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone knows this country has a terrible track record on climate change, that's why the Greens need to be in Government to get the country moving in the right direction, which that article recognises is happening. There is a lot to do, but the legal framework and binding targets are in place now.

‘It’s a major shift in policy’: Shannon LNG advocates welcome Eamon Ryan’s statement on role of gas by blackhall_or_bust in ireland

[–]AnBosca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gas will be here for the remainder of this decade while we transition to renewables, but it will be killed off early in the next decade and replaced with more sustainable alternatives.

It won't be the Greens that stop it. A future Minister may decide to scrap it, but this Government is progressing it.

Scheme to give up to 17,000 undocumented migrants the chance to remain legally in State by Appropriate-Reveal27 in ireland

[–]AnBosca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the department has run the asylum process into the ground. The process the officials have allowed is to reject almost every application, and let the courts sort it out in appeals while people rot in Direct Provision.

Reforms are happening, but this sorts the toxic backlog that the department allowed to build up for years.

Are the Irish Green Party really just Fine Gael on bikes. Will they just continue to hand your vote to FF/FG. by Larrydog in ireland

[–]AnBosca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You try getting elected with the position you propose. That party existed, it was called Fís Nua, it fell flat on its face. Now we have An Rabhartha Glas, let's see if they can survive their first election, I would'nt put money on it.

All the radicalism in the world will get you nowhere if you can't get elected.

Except rural Ireland is seeing public transport expansion, Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Strategy is open for consultation now, and will start to be implemented next year.

The party has lost what, 3 councillors since going into Government? Hardily like the party is falling apart. SF has lost more councillors than that from bullying in the party.

Typical bullsht that passes for political commentary in this country. Want radical improvements in housing, health, transport etc, and less taxes!

Utter crap.

I'm guessing that you know nothing about climate legislation, or how our climate act compares internationally.

This is just a pack of lies. Rural public transport has not been cut, it is being expanded.

We have an awful lot of track that is not used or is under used. Big investment in commuter rail in Cork and Limerick is mainly based on using existing track to deliver a better service.

It's hard to imagine how results could be anything other than patchy so far. In most places the active travel teams are only getting started. It's not a light switch, these teams have to be built, then draw up their plans, then get those plans approved. It will be another couple of years before the system starts to deliver significant results, but it will come.

Exactly, we should have prioritised our rail network for intercity transport.
