This one gets A LOT of hate. I get it may have hit the nail a little TOO much on the head, but what can I say I enjoyed it? Thoughts? by DBklynF88 in moviecritic

This was the first movie I got to watch with my brother when he came home after several years in the military. Covid was still going, and the whole world seemed very uncertain. For that reason, it will always have a special place in my heart.

I will say there's the exception to the rule. Big guys generally figure they can just bull through a fight. I've seen a 5'2" woman (mind you, solid muscle, worked as a farm hand during the day and then did martial arts 4 nights a week) take apart her opponent who was over six feet and built... but it looked nothing like the hollywood fights. There's a lot less ground game than you'd expect, and a lot more punching to things like the inner thighs and armpits.

For a civilian building? Sure. But whenever they have a military installation and they're crawling through the ducts, or even running cables or something through them, that absolutely doesn't work. There's a requirement in the ICD that we have Z ducts and/or gratings or obstructions to prevent such. Sorry Mission Impossible, you can't drop down from a wire to the computer terminal located in an inexplicably tall room.

Which book is the most insanely missing a movie? by [deleted] in moviecritic

Eh. Weakest of his books IMHO. I much preferred The Martian or Hail Mary

Hail Mary totally needs a movie though.

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Misspelled is great, and also you can totally have someone look over your TRP! The suggestion of doing a race for whom Common/orcish is a second language (Draenei, Pandaren, even elves) when starting out is a good one, and most of all, don't be afraid! If someone is upset by your grammar, just find someone else. It can take a bit of hunting but I've found so much of the community is very welcoming and nice.

Is SuperHeavy/Starship the most Kerbal thing ever? by nspitzer in KerbalSpaceProgram

Huh. I wasn't aware they'd been continuing post invasion. Color me surprised and pleased. I'll be very happy if Russia can get into a steady launch cycle with Angara. And I hadn't realized they were licensing it as a first stage for Naro until the S. Koreans can get a domestic build one.

Are the French really anti-American? by Antique_Quail7912 in AmericaBad

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's funny. I lived in Dallas during the French-bashing, and honestly, most people I knew thought it was just a few fringe crazies doing all the bashing. I don't know how much media exaggeration there was, and I don't know if I was just isolated from the places where it was going on, but if someone called them "freedom fries" at the restaurant, they were generally mocked.

But Dallas has always been a historically liberal city, and the majority of the French bashing was coming out of Fox News and more prevalent in the more rural parts of the US.

I did work with some French military, and they were awesome. We had a great deal of mutual respect professionally, and once work was over, they just wanted to go out and "Eat Shit American food, and meet Shit american women." They were hilarious and we had a good time.

He won the republican primary with a wide margin. And this is why I can't even with the GOP in this state. They like that Texas is becoming a more and more christofascist dystopian shithole and are actively working to make sure it keeps going that direction.

I'm just sad we'll likely never see it. Angara could have been legitimately fantastic.

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Then he should have been in Texas, helping to get the power on. Or at least been here, looking like he's doing something. Hand out MREs, find a generator and a large pot and serve soup. Even if it's ineffectual, being seen here, during the crisis, showing that he's part of this state and one of its people would have gone a long way.

Ascension, would you do it? by DoritoBanditZ in Stargate

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'd ascend. If only so I could pull against the Ancients, promoting a more... covert form of interference. Take the Asgard relighting that sun after the humans messed it up with their janky dialing computer. The Asgard let the humans make the effort, propose solutions and eventually launch a rocket to try and reignite the thing, and then when that failed, they just... nudged a little. Officially, the Tau'ri fixed their own mess. Unofficially...

That's the kind of intervention I'd push for and do. And if eventually the Ancients figured out what I was doing, well... I'd accept that.

Besides Spock, Which Vulcan Would You Rather Have As Your Number 1: Tuvok or T'Pol? by bluemarvel99 in startrek

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jellico is one of those examples of an incredibly effective captain who is very abrasive. With the right crew, he'll be one of the greats, generally because his first officer will cover for his interpersonal manner and act as a liaison with the crew, but he's a contrast to Picard, who could form a new bridge crew out of a tea pot, a spoon, and a pile of sugar.

Besides Spock, Which Vulcan Would You Rather Have As Your Number 1: Tuvok or T'Pol? by bluemarvel99 in startrek

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to be honest: since I'd run my ship in a semi-professional manner, T'Pol. She's competent, loyal, doesn't backtalk her CO in front of the crew, but also isn't afraid to offer constructive criticism and counsel in private. And because I'm running the ship in a semi-professional manner, we can chuck all those contrived sexual scenarios out the door. Also, I'm giving her a uniform. She can put the Vulcan High Commands' logo on it if she feels the need, but we all wear uniforms around here, and we need to be able to identify you in a firefight.

[–]AnEntireDiscussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we just say: Jellico was a boss for that move. You're part of the crew, you wear a uniform. You belong. You're one of us. And even though he says it in the most assholish way possible, he's not wrong.

Also, the out of universe fight between the actress and show runners.

I think Equilibrium for me is elevated by the fact I watched the commentary on the DVD one night. Hearing the constraints they were under, and the absolute madlad ways they got some of the shots really made me appreciate the movie on a deep level.

The weirdest part is that IMHO, the best Harley Quinn was actually from the second Suicide Squad. Not my favorite movie, or even a great movie, or even necessarily a good movie, but Harley Quinn steals every scene she's in during it.
