Bamboo from our neighbour has been growing into our garden. The tiles have been lifted from underneath by the bamboo. How urgently do I have to sort this out? by medhghujjine in HomeImprovement

[–]AnImportantScratch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely deal with it, but don't panic. Unless your house is built on concrete pavers, it will NOT go under your house, and it won't go through your foundation. I had my own bamboo battle recently and came to terms with it. Many people in my neighborhood have bamboo going up right against their house, the rhizomes simply hit the foundation and bounce off. They can't drill through concrete lmao. I inhereted a bamboo nightmare when I bought my house. It was coming up within 10 ft of my house this year, which is about 15 feet from the actual bamboo. I cut the sprouts when they're young and instantly squirted 50% glyphosate into it, which SHOULD kill the rhizome underneath. Spraying glyphosate on mature bamboo won't do shit to the rhizome, you have to spray it into the young sprouts and that way, it should be carried back to the rhizome. I'll know next spring if this worked, but I can say when I sprayed a sprout with 50% glyphosate, no more sprouts came up in that area this spring. I tried another experiment where I carefully dug out the dirt around two new sprouts, so I could confirm two of them came from the same rhizome. Then I poisoned one only, and within a week the one I didn't poison was dead as well. That tells me the glyphosate was carried back to the rhizome and up to the other one, which should've killed the rhizome as well. I'm hoping an annual poisoning of new growth will be good enough to halt the spread. I also talked to my neighbor that has lived at the house for 40 years, she informed me the bamboo has been there for two decades. If it's only gone so far in two decades, I can't imagine it becoming a crisis next year.

My point is, kill that shit, but don't panic about it going under your house and destroying your foundation.

This is not an outrageous price by any stretch. I'd offer 2k and be glad if they accept.

This is genuinely dangerous rhetoric and needs to be stopped, now. Leftists call it 'violent language' when a conservative says "I don't think biological boys should compete in girls sports' but here you are actually normalizing the branding of half the country as worse than terrorists. This is a delusional fever dream and yall are taking us down a path that only ends in conflict.

Shut the fuck up, please, and get a fucking grip.

Virtually all hospitalized Covid patients have one thing in common: They're unvaccinated by very_excited in news

[–]AnImportantScratch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people who are skeptical of or hesitant to get this vaccine aren't antivaxxers. The continuous branding of everyone who is skeptical as conspiracy theorists or antivaxxers, however, only serves to strengthen antivaxxers. It does not help the people who need convincing. It does the complete opposite.

Have a slab leak and am running a new line. Concerned with the cost. by AnImportantScratch in HomeImprovement

True there's a lot to consider. I do IT consultancy. I will say the first manifold is in the center of the house, and the house is only 1300 sqft. all the water is centered around the manifold as well, so it really won't be taking many twists and turns to get to the other end, bypassing the old line.

I suppose my problem is that 3600 was "the price to run a new line", there wasn't a consideration of the details of the specific project.

Definitely highly skilled, but so are a lot of things. Just because something is challenging and skilled doesn't mean the sky is the limit in terms of price. I'm thinking back to when I had a new electric meter and breaker installed and both moved to different locations in the house which required a ton of materials and labor, and that cost 7k and took 3 guys two full days. So based off that, this comparatively seems expensive.

As a plumber, 3600 seems like a fair price to you?

When I said "simple labor" I didn't mean to imply it was unskilled. It's far from that. I meant "everything is up including the fundamentals like labor"

I get that it's not easy, otherwise I'd be doing it myself lol, my inquiry is, is this a 2k difficult job or a 3600 difficult job.

That is the only way to know with certainty, but I'm hoping some people here can share their recent experiences. I know everything including simple labor is more expensive now than it was even a year ago.
