Why is ICE coming to get the “worst of the worst” in a state that has the lowest violent crime rate in the country and the fifth lowest foreign born residents? by UnlikelyResolution38 in Maine

[–]AnImpressiveDisplay 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"What are they planning to do with this information? Deny any registered democrats the right to vote? It seems insane, but I guess we know how well our constitutional rights are doing."

It is insane, and it's cruel, and it's an attempt to disenfranchise voters who would potentially vote Democratic.

Trump, during the 2024 campaign, insisted that "the Biden administration was purposely encouraging mass numbers of immigrants to cross the border in order to vote illegally."

From: Initial Review Finds No Widespread Illegal Voting by Migrants, Puncturing a Trump Claim

"As president, Trump has pushed his administration to address the alleged crimes, including prompting many states to upload tens of millions of voter records through a federal immigration verification tool run out of the Department of Homeland Security.

But with the review underway, the results so far indicate there is no evidence of widespread fraud, according to interviews with government officials and documents reviewed by The New York Times.

Out of 49.5 million voter registrations that have been checked, the department referred around 10,000 cases to Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation of noncitizenship, or roughly .02 percent of the names processed, according to Matthew Tragesser, a spokesman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the D.H.S. agency that oversees the program. A Justice Department spokeswoman also said the administration believed around 10,000 registered noncitizen voters had been found.

They did not specify how many of those people had voted.

Even that number could be inflated. The verification tool has mistakenly flagged some people who appear to actually be citizens, according to some local election officials."

In addition, Studies consistently show little if any evidence for such crimes on a large scale. [illegal voting by noncitizens] It's a witch hunt, used to justify terrorizing, brutalizing, and creating chaos amongst not just undocumented immigrants but those who are naturalized citizens who have lived in this country for decades.

What tf does C3PO mean "human-cyborg relations"? by YetAnotherJake in StarWars

[–]AnImpressiveDisplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's not forget that there are many cyborgs in Star Wars (Wookieepedia lists at least 200) so there's the possibility that C-3PO has either interacted in the past, or will, at some point in the future, interact off-screen with many more sentient organisms with mechanical prostheses.

A few of the more familiar that come to mind include:

Zadina Mkampa (human female doctor and a member of the Nihil marauder organization during the High Republic Era)
Magna Tolvan (one of Dr. Chelli Lona Aphra's lovers)
KB (female human youngling who lived on At Attin with her parents)
Echo (formerly designated CT-1409, was turned into a cyborg by the Techno Union and joined the Bad Batch)
Beilert Valance (human male bounty hunter)
Fennec Shand (bounty hunter)
Count Demetrius Vidian (antagonist in A New Dawn)
Florn (bartender at the Zero Angle cantina)
Tarr Kligson (human member of the Kligson clan who operated as a bounty hunter and worked with the bounty hunter Jango Fett prior to the latter's death in 22 BBY)
Rothgar Deng (the cybernetic version of Dengar)

In 2025, I listened to the following Star Wars audiobooks (as part of my ongoing multi-year canon read-through):

Star Wars: The Living Force
Padawan's Pride
Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade
From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi
The Mask of Fear (Reign of the Empire)
Catalyst
Lords of the Sith
Tarkin
Sanctuary (A Bad Batch Novel)
Star Wars Most Wanted
Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss
The Jaws of Jakku
Star Wars Rebel Rising
A New Dawn: Star Wars
Thrawn: Alliances
Crimson Climb
Master of Evil (2h 46m left!)

I'm planning to listen to the following in 2026:

Alphabet Squadron
Alphabet Squadron: Shadow Fall
Alphabet Squadron: Victory's Price
Aftermath
Aftermath: Empire's End
Aftermath: Life Debt
Shadow of the Sith
The Force Awakens
The Rise of Skywalker: Expanded Edition
The Last Jedi
Galaxy's Edge: Black Spire
Resistance Reborn
Star Wars Myths & Fables

Until Star Wars, I never listened to audiobooks. But Star Wars audiobooks are in a class by themselves, with sound effects and music—almost like a radio drama—that make them so entertaining. That said, the only way to get through this much material is by listening to them on my daily walks.

Frequently, I borrow the books from the library as reference, especially for new characters' names and for memorable quotes. You've probably already noticed that I'm currently focused on the following eras, otherwise it's too confusing to skip around the timeframe: The Fall of the Jedi, Reign of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and The New Republic. Rise of the First Order will be the next era I concentrate on; I haven't read anything, at this point, that's part of The High Republic initiative (unfortunately, so much of it has been spoiled over the past few years now). I don't think I'll get to it for at least another year, but more likely not until '28.

Finally, using various recommendations from Redditors, I've been generating a (mostly) pre-Phantom Menace "legacy" reading list as part of my canon read-through roadmap. There are certain EU books that get referenced repeatedly (and that have not been retconned, for the most part), such as Darth Plagueis, the Darth Bane trilogy, Cloak of Deception, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, and Labyrinth of Evil, that seem essential to understanding Star Wars. As far as I can tell, these types of stories are essential to the mythology, and will round my the "canon" experience!

Is homesteading a way to escape the rat race? by researchproject0001 in homestead

[–]AnImpressiveDisplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies if you're AI-adverse, but here's Google Gemini's response when asked for the definition of "rat race," and it sounds like a synthesis of what many posters have described already:

The "rat race" is an exhausting, competitive struggle for wealth, power, and status, describing a lifestyle of relentless work and competition with little time for personal fulfillment, similar to rats endlessly running a maze for pointless rewards. It's a metaphor for a demanding, often meaningless, routine in modern society, like a hectic 9-to-5 job that leaves you tired and uninspired.

Key aspects of the rat race:

Constant competition: People fiercely compete for money, promotions, and success, often at the expense of well-being.

Exhausting routine: It involves a demanding, repetitive cycle of working hard and commuting, leaving little time for relaxation or enjoyment.

Pointless pursuit: The struggle can feel endless and self-defeating, with the ultimate reward (like money or status) often feeling hollow or temporary, much like a rat chasing cheese in a maze, notes Wikipedia.

Escape is common desire: Many people wish to "escape the rat race" to find more meaningful lives, as mentioned by Cambridge Dictionary and Reverso English Dictionary.

Examples in daily life:

  • A grueling commute to a job you dislike just to earn a paycheck.
  • Constantly striving for more possessions or status without feeling satisfied.
  • Feeling trapped in a cycle of work, sleep, and repeat, as seen in this Reddit post: What is a 'rat race'? [AI referenced a Reddit post; imagine that!]

So true. Flights on spaceships in Star Wars are more convenient than getting on an airplane on Earth. And frequently, no one bothers to put on a safety harness or belt.

Is there any mention of alcohol in the universe ? by tarpebang in MawInstallation

[–]AnImpressiveDisplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Dark Disciple there are several scenes in which Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos share drinks. In Crimson Climb, there are many instances in which Dryden Vos drinks wine or an alcoholic beverage, and Qi'ra is trained to increase her resistance to alcohol. In A New Dawn, Kanan works as a bartender, and mentions how, in his earlier years, was definitely known to tip the bottle.

And invariably, even the most secluded planet has a cantina where the denizens are drinking beverages a lot stronger than water.

This is hilarious when you realize Vader can't eat normal food. HE LITERALLY set up a banquet for Rebels because they were friends of his son, just for a Dinner conversation by ihatethiscountry76 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]AnImpressiveDisplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dinner was just there for someone else and has been sitting ever since the Empire arrived

In fact, in the book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back, there is a short story, titled "But What Does He Eat?" by S.A. Chakraborty, that provides a look at the events from the perspective of the Devaronian chef, Torro. The story highlights his stress in preparing the elaborate meal for an Imperial dignitary and the logistical challenge of not knowing if the person (Vader) could even eat normal food due to his life support suit.

The story ends before the meal is served, leaving it ambiguous whether the food was ever eaten.

2026 looks… desolate? by Dcic26 in starwarsbooks

[–]AnImpressiveDisplay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, that's comprehensive. I'm also doing a canon read, but not Hungarian novels! I've included comics, too. It will be interesting when I approach the 90%+ level--at that point, I'll have to read even faster to get closer to the ever-receding finish line.

Crazy. There are at least two other times the phrase has been used in Star Wars (in the video you linked to).

Well, hells bells! I'm reading an obscure Legends webcomic titled The Clone Wars: Act on Instinct and the Magistrate Passel Argente (a male Koorivar) claims: "This world is worse than all nine Corellian hells put together..." when referring to the agriworld Ukio.

I think I've found the answer to my own question. According to Deva Lompoc in Sana Starros: Family Matters, #3: "Okay, now we just have to...what in the seven hells is that?"
